They \u201cfelt that when they read a book they loved, they saw every aspect of it. Not only that, but they felt that the greatness of a book was predicated on the fact that they were able to visualize it. \u2018That character was so real,\u2019 they\u2019d say. That myth of the little homunculus sitting in the back of your skull, watching the author\u2019s movie being projected onto the front of your skull\u2014that\u2019s really important to people. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/portrait-cover-artist-interview-peter-mendelsund?utm_source=tny&amp;utm_campaign=generalsocial&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">But the whole edifice crumbles when you start to ask questions about it<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Was John Hancock\u2019s signature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/history\/2014\/08\/john_hancock_s_declaration_of_independence_signature_was_it_too_big.html?wpsrc=fol_tw\" target=\"_blank\">really too big<\/a>? \u201cDid Hancock know that fifty-six men would ultimately sign the document when he put pen to paper? Or might he have assumed fewer signatories, and thus more space for signing? We know this much: You can\u2019t fit fifty-six Hancock-sized signatures onto the parchment \u2026 the document would have needed approximately 5.5 more inches of vertical space to accommodate all the names\u2014even with crammed spacing and slim margins.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Good news for underemployed babysitters: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/art\/news\/a-gallery-visit-leave-the-children-at-home-says-top-artist-9644678.html?origin=internalSearch\" target=\"_blank\">Taking your kids to a gallery<\/a> is a \u201ctotal waste of time,\u201d according to the artist Jake Chapman. \u201cHe says that standing a child in front of a Pollock is an \u2018insult\u2019 to the American who pioneered the abstract expressionism. \u2018It\u2019s like saying \u2026 it\u2019s as moronic as a child? Children are not human yet,\u2019 the father-of-three declared.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Questioning Shakespeare\u2019s conservatism: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2014\/08\/shakespeares-plays-living-arguments-for-conservatism\/375362\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rebels and usurpers in Shakespeare&#8217;s plays are always the bad guys<\/a> \u2026 Rebellion against one\u2019s superiors is presented as a matter of misguided jealousy and intrinsic spite.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2014-08-06\/film\/this-is-softcore\/?utm_content=buffera36b4&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">A maestro of aspirational porn<\/a>, Radley Metzger populated his soft- and hard-core films of the 1960s and \u201970s with Continental swells whose luxe dwellings and vast expanses of land made for optimal prime pleasure domes \u2026 [he] elevated his randy projects with sumptuous production values, his meticulous decor and mise-en-sc\u00e8ne long outmoded in today\u2019s quickie online porn.\u201d (For the curious, eight of Metzger\u2019s films are coming to Lincoln Center.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Mendelsund, who designs book jackets, asked people what they see when they read.
