It\u2019s not just in his medical history but in <em>Ulysses<\/em>, where two scholars \u201cfound syphilis everywhere \u2026 Their journal article for <em>Archives of Internal Medicine<\/em>\u00a0includes a two-page table listing apparent references to syphilitic symptoms throughout <em>Ulysses<\/em> \u2026 \u2018The letter <em>s<\/em> hisses throughout the book as a reminder of the <em>s<\/em> in syphilis (a word that not only begins but also ends with <em>s<\/em>, as does the novel).\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In Greece, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/news-general\/more-fifty-ancient-greek-inventions-brought-life-through-incredible-reconstructions#!bwXKJc\" target=\"_blank\">a new museum reconstructs the inventions of the ancients<\/a>, \u201cincluding Archimedes\u2019 screw, the robot-servant of Philon, the automatic theatre of Heron, ancient war machines, and the famous analogue \u2018computer\u2019 of Antikythera.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>The Paris Review<\/em>\u2019s art editor, Charlotte Strick, discusses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/08\/05\/cant-and-wont-lydia-davis_n_5648702.html\" target=\"_blank\">her process in designing the jacket for Lydia Davis\u2019s <em>Can\u2019t and Won\u2019t<\/em><\/a>. \u201c\u2009\u2018The Cows\u2019 is the longest story in this collection, and cows by nature \u2018can\u2019t and won\u2019t.\u2019 They typically require a lot of waiting around. This sparked an idea early on in my design process \u2026 I tried an all-over wallpaper pattern of tiny cows that I imagined as a pre-printed case.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jamesharveytm\/status\/496898613252227072\" target=\"_blank\">A photo of brawling Ukrainian parliamentarians<\/a> has all the beauty and compositional fluency of a Renaissance painting.<\/li>\n<li>Scrabble has expanded its dictionary, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/culturenews\/11012673\/Chillax-Scrabble-has-added-5000-words-to-its-dictionary.html\" target=\"_blank\">adding some five thousand words<\/a>\u2014most of them are expectable neologisms like <em>frenemy <\/em>and <em>bromance<\/em>, but others are more novel: e.g., <em>quinzhee<\/em>, a shelter made by hollowing out a snow pile, and <em>qajaq, <\/em>an Inuit precursor to the Kayak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe image of a syphilitic Joyce is one that few scholars have wanted to conjure in print\u201d\u2014but evidence suggests that Joyce did indeed suffer from syphilis.
