But that loose style has been around for centuries: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/08\/03\/the_truth_about_internet_slang_it_goes_way_back\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=socialflow\" target=\"_blank\">modern text-speak bears a striking resemblance to the system of abbreviations and shorthand present in medieval manuscripts<\/a>.\u201d (<em>Haha<\/em>, for instance, made an appearance on vellum as early as 1000 AD.)<\/li>\n<li>Also appearing in medieval manuscripts: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectorsweekly.com\/articles\/naughty-nuns-flatulent-monks-and-other-surprises-of-sacred-medieval-manuscripts\/\" target=\"_blank\">illustrations of flatulent monks, killer rabbits, an ogre with an anal fixation, and a nun plucking penises from a phallus tree<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/2014\/07\/geoff-dyer-there-should-be-annual-festival-devoted-me\" target=\"_blank\">Geoff Dyer attends an academic conference devoted to Geoff Dyer<\/a>. \u201c\u2018When speaking about the work, use Dyer,\u2019 urged Dr. Bianca Leggett, the convenor of the conference, in her opening remarks. \u2018When speaking about the man\u00a0in the room, use Geoff.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<em>Partisan Review<\/em> is remembered for the editorial vision of two of its founders, William Phillips and Philip Rahv \u2026 but a third founder of the magazine, poet and thriller-writer Kenneth Fearing, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/jewish-arts-and-culture\/books\/180422\/kenneth-fearing\" target=\"_blank\">has been largely forgotten<\/a>, in part because he was suspected of being a Communist, and in part because he wrote thrillers.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Paris Review<\/em> contributor Kristin Dombek <a href=\"https:\/\/nplusonemag.com\/online-only\/help-desk\/bank-robbin-in-brooklyn\/\" target=\"_blank\">turns her advice column into a meditation on political economy<\/a>: \u201cYou have been trained from childhood to think that labor, in and of itself, is both a right and one of the most important goals of your life; you have been told that your \u2018career\u2019 is the same thing as \u2018who you are in the world.\u2019 Yet like most employed people in the United States, you work jobs that you consider to be banal, brutal, or both.
