A hundred years ago, if someone said something was <em>relatable<\/em>, she meant that it could be told\u2014the Shakespearean sense of <em>relate<\/em>\u2014or that it could be connected to some other thing. As recently as a decade ago, even as <em>relatable<\/em> began to accrue its current meaning, the word remained uncommon. The contemporary meaning of <em>relatable<\/em>\u2014to describe a character or a situation in which an ordinary person might see himself reflected\u2014first was popularized by the television industry \u2026 But to reject any work because we feel that it does not reflect us in a shape that we can easily recognize\u2014because it does not exempt us from the active exercise of imagination or the effortful summoning of empathy\u2014is our own failure. It\u2019s a failure that has been dispiritingly sanctioned by the rise of <em>relatable<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And for a certain audience, video games are all too relatable. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/2014\/08\/how-gaming-behaviour-can-spill-over-real-life\" target=\"_blank\">They begin to impinge on reality<\/a>, an occurrence that scientists call <em>game transfer phenomena<\/em>: \u201cI used to play [Tetris] for hours every day. When I went to bed I would see falling blocks as I closed my eyes. I often experienced the same thing when waking up \u2026 a female video game player [was] suffering from delusions of being persecuted, exhibiting violent behavior and experiencing constant imaginary auditory hallucinations triggered by the music of the Super Mario Brothers video game.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>How do Hollywood studios <a href=\"http:\/\/priceonomics.com\/the-business-of-fake-hollywood-money\/\" target=\"_blank\">create so much prop money for their movies without being detained as counterfeiters<\/a>? (And why don\u2019t we do the same?)<\/li>\n<li><em>MFA vs. NYC<\/em> = <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pshares.org\/index.php\/mfa-vs-dmv\/\" target=\"_blank\">MFA vs. DMV<\/a>. My personal favorite: the \u201cWidening Gyre\u201d road sign. New drivers always miss those.<\/li>\n<li>The German film theorist Harun Farocki <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/rip-harun-farocki-german-filmmaker-and-theorist-207596?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialMarketing&amp;utm_campaign=Default:1:Default\" target=\"_blank\">has died at seventy<\/a>. His best-known work is probably <em>The Inextinguishable Fire<\/em>, from 1969: \u201cIn the film\u2019s most famous moment, the camera dollies in on Farocki\u2014who has just finished reading a napalm victim\u2019s report out loud\u2014as he puts out his cigarette on his arm, explaining that napalm burns at seven times the temperature.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhence comes relatability?
