Photo: Susan Lesch<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Museums have a real, if enviable, problem on their hands\u2014they\u2019re too popular. \u201cSeeing masterpieces may be a soul-nourishing cultural rite of passage, but soaring attendance has turned many museums <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/07\/29\/arts\/design\/european-museums-straining-under-weight-of-popularity.html\" target=\"_blank\">into crowded, sauna-like spaces<\/a>, forcing institutions to debate how to balance accessibility with art preservation.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/books\/2014\/07\/28\/book-buzz-ulysses-to-become-virtual-reality-game\/13279053\/\" target=\"_blank\">virtual-reality edition of <em>Ulysses<\/em><\/a> sounds about as abstruse as the novel itself: \u201cAs a user of <em>In Ulysses<\/em> walks along a virtual Sandymount Strand, the book will be read to them\u2014they will hear Stephen\u2019s thoughts as they are written\u2014but these thoughts will then be illustrated around the user in real-time using textual annotations, images, and links.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Fewer people are giving books as gifts\u2014the number of gift-book sales <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/books\/10996661\/Publishing-industry-blow-as-nine-million-fewer-books-given-as-gifts-in-2013.html\" target=\"_blank\">fell by nine million in a year<\/a>. (If you\u2019d like to reduce the deficit and you need an excuse to give, today is <a href=\"http:\/\/tigerday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Tiger Day<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>Trend alert: there\u2019s never been a finer moment to be a deceased performer. \u201cTwo thousand fourteen is only half over, yet the year in culture has already been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2014\/07\/year-of-posthumous-performances.html\" target=\"_blank\">dominated by people who are dead<\/a> \u2026 I mean people like Michael Jackson, who, five years in the grave, performed at the <em>Billboard<\/em> Music Awards in May. And Rick James, who\u2019s been dead for a decade and who has a new memoir this year. And the great Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died in February and has a new movie out.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>From <em>Disobedient Objects<\/em>, a book about design\u2019s effect on social change, a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_eye\/2014\/07\/25\/disobedient_objects_at_the_victoria_and_albert_museum_looks_at_currency.html\" target=\"_blank\">the storied history of defacing
