Without it, we wouldn\u2019t be able to compose windy love letters from stadium bleachers, write novels on subway commutes, or dash off breakup texts while in line at the post office.\u201d The wondrous history of autocorrect, including a brief meditation on the nature of profanity. (Because autocorrect \u201ccouldn&#8217;t very well go around recommending the correct spelling of <em>mothrefukcer.<\/em>\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThree hundred thousand books are published in the United States every year. A few hundred, at most, could be called financial or creative successes. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/07\/27\/opinion\/sunday\/failure-is-our-muse.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;module=c-column-top-span-region&amp;region=c-column-top-span-region&amp;WT.nav=c-column-top-span-region\" target=\"_blank\">The majority of books by successful writers are failures<\/a>. The majority of writers are failures. And then there are the would-be writers, those who have failed to be writers in the first place, a category which, if you believe what people tell you at parties, constitutes the bulk of the species.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/tip-sheet\/article\/63430-the-best-bolano-book-is-distant-star.html\" target=\"_blank\">the distinct merits of Bola\u00f1o\u2019s <em>Distant Star<\/em><\/a>: \u201cAt some point in 1995, Bola\u00f1o seems to have discovered that he could expand a published text without diluting its effect or getting bogged down in circumstantial details, and that he could bring back characters and give them fuller lives without being strictly constrained by what he had already written about them.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>After twenty-seven years, the Rodeo Bar, \u201cNew York\u2019s longest-running honky-tonk,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/07\/28\/nyregion\/with-rent-up-its-quittin-time-for-a-honky-tonk.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;smid=nytimesarts\" target=\"_blank\">has closed<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m not happy about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/features\/9270211\/whats-wrong-with-sunglasses\/\" target=\"_blank\">people wearing sunglasses<\/a> at all. Proper upstanding citizens never used to.
