The people demand the truth!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/07\/20\/the_truth_about_cliches_why_the_stigma_against_them_isnt_entirely_fair\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=socialflow\" target=\"_blank\">On clich\u00e9s and their complications<\/a>: \u201cAn expression is much more likely to be regarded as a clich\u00e9 if it has typical or frequent use in contexts where it doesn\u2019t apply very well (by being imprecise, misleading, or inaccurate, for example). Take the noun phrase <em>best-kept secret<\/em> \u2026 As a few examples will show, things that are dubbed best-kept secrets are in fact often not secret at all, and it is rarely specified, sometimes not even implied, in what sense they are \u2018kept.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Remembering James Garner: \u201cGarner wasn\u2019t an actor who \u2018reached,\u2019 per se. He wasn\u2019t doing accents or putting on prosthetics or trying to make himself over into someone he wasn\u2019t. <a href=\"http:\/\/thedissolve.com\/news\/2765-james-garner-1928-2014-a-different-kind-of-macho-m\/\" target=\"_blank\">Movie and TV producers hired him to be James Garner<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Is Amazon killing writing, <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2014\/07\/17\/amazon-isnt-killing-writing-the-market-is\/?ncid=twittersocialshare\" target=\"_blank\">or is it the market?<\/a> \u201cWe are witnessing a bad Hollywood remake of a bad Hollywood remake of the Content Wars of the 1990s and 2000s \u2026 The plot remains the same: The traditional publishers of content defend their business models against the assault of the Internet. There\u2019s some suspense, and then the Internet wins.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Weird Al\u2019s usage wars: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=13552&amp;utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\">I purposely left a split infinitive at the end of my song<\/a> \u2026 to be ironic, and also to see how many online grammar pedants it would annoy.\u201d But then he didn\u2019t realize that <em>spastic<\/em> is a slur in the UK \u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fact-checking the Knausgaard craze: Have Norwegian workplaces really instituted \u201cKnausgaard-free days\u201d in response to the success of My Struggle?
