(Fortunately, the one is pretty good.)<\/li>\n<li>A 540-year-old book\u2014the first to be printed in English\u2014has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-28344300\" target=\"_blank\">sold at auction for more than a million pounds<\/a>. \u201c<em>The Recuyell of the Histories of Troye<\/em> is a version of a French book written around 1463 \u2026 The story is an epic romance which portrays the heroes of Greek mythology as chivalric figures.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI do own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/books\/2014\/07\/reading-through-someone-elses-eyes.html\" target=\"_blank\">a pair of unusual books that I treasure<\/a> \u2026 they are collections of poems, written by Howard Moss, poetry editor of <em>The New Yorker<\/em> from 1948 to 1987. They originally belonged to the poet May Swenson (1913\u20131989), who has been a favorite of mine since I stumbled on her \u201cHalf Sun, Half Sleep\u201d in high school \u2026 Each is heavily underlined, in both pencil and ink\u2014an emphatic, and ugly, green ink, seemingly more suited for some censorious schoolmistress than for Swenson, a nicely calibrated nature poet. Still, I take great pleasure in her scarring underscorings and in her occasional approving check mark or cryptic annotation.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The Supreme Court has refused to hear an \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/books\/booknews\/10975316\/Sherlock-Holmes-and-the-battle-over-literary-rights.html\" target=\"_blank\">emergency petition<\/a>\u201d from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle\u2019s heirs, who are seeking \u201cindefinite copyright protection\u201d for Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.<\/li>\n<li>In which the novelist Scott Cheshire, an ex\u2013Jehovah\u2019s Witness, <a href=\"http:\/\/harpers.org\/blog\/2014\/07\/god-lives-on-lemon-street\/\" target=\"_blank\">visits the Watchtower headquarters in Brooklyn<\/a>: \u201cI felt like throwing up, so I headed for the men\u2019s room to pull myself together, pressed my face against the cold metal towel dispenser, and fainted.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Javier Mar\u00edas can think of seven reasons not to write novels, and only one reason to write them.
