My own attempts were feeble in comparison. \u2018He plays bass and dislikes capitalism and has long hair and an intense look,\u2019 I\u2019d say to a friend in explaining why I liked a certain guy, and the truth was that it was the best I could do.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Jules Verne was unquestionably imaginative: a science-fiction pioneer. And yet \u2026 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/articles\/fantastic-voyage_796380.html?nopager=1\" target=\"_blank\">Verne may be a master of sorts, but he is not a master of high art<\/a>. A casual reader, even in English translation, can see that Verne\u2019s prose is rarely more than serviceable and that it gets overheated when he presumes to court eloquence \u2026 Each of Verne\u2019s heroes is a nonpareil, the most remarkable man in the world\u2014as long as the reader is immersed in his particular story. Only in other Verne novels\u2014and in television commercials for a Mexican beer\u2014can one find his equals.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Dungeons &amp; Dragons has turned forty, and, \u201cfor certain writers, especially those raised in the seventies and eighties, all that time spent in basements has paid off. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/07\/14\/books\/dungeons-dragons-has-influenced-a-generation-of-writers.html\" target=\"_blank\">D&amp;D helped jump-start their creative lives<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Archie will die <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/jul\/16\/how-archie-dies-teenage-comic-stars-heroic-fate-revealed\" target=\"_blank\">by taking a bullet for his gay friend<\/a>. \u201cArchie taking the bullet really is a metaphor for acceptance,\u201d Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater said, in case you didn\u2019t get it.<\/li>\n<li>From Bach to Deadmau5: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.residentadvisor.net\/feature.aspx?2104\" target=\"_blank\">a prehistory of electronic-music festivals<\/a> traces their roots to the nineteenth century.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On reading Middlemarch and being twenty-one: \u201cEliot\u2019s ability to describe people was, in its subtlety and depth and scrupulousness, so many levels above my pay-grade.
