Now, a type designer in Minneapolis has tried to re-create the font from <em>The Good Bad Man<\/em>, a Douglas Fairbanks vehicle from 1916. \u201cIn 1916 the titles would have been painted or drawn on a smooth surface and then photographed with the motion-picture camera. There were no optical printers in those days, so the titles would literally have been shot by someone hand cranking a motion-picture camera.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In Athens, the Caryatid statues (five maidens \u201camong the great divas of ancient Greece\u201d) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/07\/08\/arts\/design\/caryatid-statues-restored-are-stars-at-athens-museum.html?referrer=\" target=\"_blank\">have emerged from a three-year cleaning<\/a> with \u201ctheir original ivory glow.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMovies, if they\u2019re very good, aren\u2019t a conversation; they\u2019re an exaltation, a shuddering of one\u2019s being, something deeply personal yet awesomely vast. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/movies\/2014\/07\/an-auteur-is-not-a-brand.html\" target=\"_blank\">That\u2019s what criticism exists to capture.<\/a> And it\u2019s exactly what\u2019s hard to talk about, what\u2019s embarrassingly rhapsodic, what runs the risk of seeming odd, pretentious, or gaseous at a time of exacting intellectual discourse.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A friendly reminder: <a href=\"http:\/\/nautil.us\/issue\/15\/turbulence\/your-brain-is-on-the-brink-of-chaos\" target=\"_blank\">your brain is on the brink of chaos<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Allan Ahlberg, a British author who\u2019s written more than 150 children\u2019s books, declined a lifetime-achievement award (and a nice cash prize) because Amazon sponsors it.
