If they\u2019re \u201creluctant to see what they do as a real job, deserving of a real salary, then who can blame the public for taking advantage of their work? \u2026 In the dark old days, the storyteller always had the best place by the campfire. Those days may be gone, but the power of story remains.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On palimpsests, digital reading, and erasable books: \u201cTo make <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2014\/07\/how-monks-remixed-technology-in-the-middle-ages\/373956\/\" target=\"_blank\">a kind of loose analogy between a palimpsest and modern technology<\/a>, computers often use a codec, or program that transfers information from one format into another, and a codec often loses content when moving between formats \u2026 What information are we devaluing now?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2014-07-09\/film\/richard-linklater-interview-boyhood\/full\/\" target=\"_blank\">Talking to Richard Linklater<\/a> about his new movie, <em>Boyhood<\/em>, which was filmed over twelve years as its lead grew into an adult: \u201cThere would be few big moments. Instead, Linklater sought out the small truths of youth: friends lost forever after a move, adult choices children can\u2019t understand, dull shifts at minimum-wage summer jobs. Passivity\u2014not drama\u2014dominates Mason\u2019s days \u2026 Linklater admits he\u2019s \u2018at war\u2019 with traditional narrative.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Who\u2019s the better prognosticator, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tor.com\/blogs\/2014\/07\/isaac-asimovs-predictions-for-the-future-respond-to-tyra-banks-predictions-for-the-future\" target=\"_blank\">Isaac Asimov or Tyra
