Photo: D-Kuru, via Wikimedia Commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Faulkner and Hemingway had a famously snippy rapport\u2014Will was all like, \u201cHe has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary,\u201d and Ernie was all like, \u201cIf you have to write the longest sentence in the world to give a book distinction, the next thing you should hire Bill Veek [sic] and use midgets\u201d\u2014which makes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2014\/07\/faulkners-review-of-ernest-hemingways-the-old-man-and-the-sea.html\" target=\"_blank\">Faulkner\u2019s one-paragraph review of <em>The Old Man and the Sea<\/em><\/a> all the more surprising in its candor and courteousness. \u201cTime may show it to be the best single piece of any of us, I mean his and my contemporaries.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/grantland.com\/features\/the-case-for-cds\/\" target=\"_blank\">The case for compact discs<\/a>, which are, at this juncture, the least hip medium in music: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of pressure in our culture right now to essentially imagine CDs out of existence \u2026 CDs currently exist in a cultural no-man\u2019s-land recently defined by singer-songwriter Todd Snider as \u2018post-hip, pre-retro\u2019\u2014the format is pass\u00e9, but not so pass\u00e9 that it qualifies for reclamation.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNo matter how many buildings, spacecrafts, and sentient robots Michael Bay explodes, the director can\u2019t seem to get any respect.\u201d So why do they perform so well at the box office, and what, exactly, motivates Bay\u2019s style? \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/heres-learned-analysis-why-michael-bay-movies-are--206582\" target=\"_blank\">This video may at least help his detractors<\/a> articulate their distaste with a greater degree of specificity.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The artist Mark Dorf\u2019s new series, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/elements\/2014\/07\/slide-show-unnatural-numbers.html#slide_ss_0=1\" target=\"_blank\">Axiom and Simulation<\/a>,\u201d attempts to illustrate how \u201cthe human race is constantly recording data and transforming elements of our physical surroundings into abstracted and non-physical calculations.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Offices across the land are under the thumb of that insidiously vague dress code, corporate casual. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.full-stop.net\/2014\/07\/08\/blog\/brittany-taylor\/the-code\/\" target=\"_blank\">No one was quite sure what corporate casual meant<\/a>. We googled it. The gist of every article is that no one knows what corporate casual is.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Faulkner and Hemingway had a famously snippy
