Photo via Wikimedia Commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>On Thursday, just as the Dow Jones closed at an all-time high, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abebooks.com\/blog\/index.php\/2014\/07\/04\/copy-of-das-kapital-sells-for-40k-just-as-dow-jones-hits-record-high\/\" target=\"_blank\">a first edition of Marx\u2019s <em>Das Kapital<\/em> sold for $40,000<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/roadsandkingdoms.com\/2014\/chasing-orwells-ghost\/\" target=\"_blank\">Searching for Orwell in Scotland<\/a>: \u201cI had come to Jura, a remote island on Scotland\u2019s west coast, to find the solitude George Orwell had sought sixty-five years earlier to finish his classic, <em>Nineteen Eighty-Four<\/em> \u2026 [I] wanted to understand why a man so accustomed to city life had come to an inaccessible island of only 190 souls to find inspiration for a novel about totalitarianism in an urbanized state\u2014why a writer at the peak of his celebrity ensconced himself in an austere farmhouse hidden in an inhospitable Scottish landscape.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Paola Antonelli is \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2014\/07\/the-most-modern-curator\/372297\/?utm_content=buffer52059&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">one of MoMA\u2019s most prominent, and provocative, curators<\/a>\u201d: \u201cPetite and energetic, she is prone to fanciful descriptions of the world and its things\u2014a verbal extension, perhaps, of a kind of object-oriented synesthesia. Design, to her, is everywhere \u2026 She has said that she believes \u2018the age of design is upon us, almost like a rapture.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In commissioned books of portraits like <a href=\"http:\/\/theappendix.net\/blog\/2014\/6\/a-renaissance-merchants-book-of-fashion\" target=\"_blank\">Matth\u00e4us Schwarz<\/a>\u2019s, from the sixteenth century, we can trace the origins of \u201cself-fashioning\u201d: \u201cSchwarz&#8217;s <em>Trachtenbuch<\/em> (Book of Clothes) was clearly designed for display, and on the whole it paints him in a good light \u2026 it announces Schwarz as a person of taste, a supporter of his city and family, a courtly lover, and a well-rounded Renaissance man. It is also, arguably, one of the first fashion books, a distant progenitor of a <em>Vogue<\/em> lookbook, as it were.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/07\/06\/magazine\/i-am-the-real-nick-cave.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;smid=nytimesarts&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">John Wray profiles Nick Cave<\/a>: \u201cCave\u2019s public persona has been called \u2018theatrical,\u2019 but a more precise term might be cinematic.
