Despite their diminutive size, the books contained big adventures, written in ink in careful script.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2014\/jul\/02\/confessions-soccer-addict\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Simic is addicted to soccer<\/a>, though in his youth he wasn\u2019t very good at playing it: \u201cMy grandmother once came to watch me play and when she got home told my mother: \u2018All the other kids were running around nicely and kicking the ball, except your son, who kept jumping up and down and flailing his arms.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Later this month, the Guggenheim will host \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guggenheim.org\/new-york\/calendar-and-events\/2014\/07\/15\/-anti-pasta-a-dinner-inspired-by-italian-futurism\/3529\" target=\"_blank\">ANTI-PASTA: A Dinner Inspired by Italian Futurism<\/a>,\u201d which observes the tenets set forth in Marinetti\u2019s \u201cManifesto of Futurist Cuisine.\u201d \u201cBe rid of pasta, that idiotic gastronomic fetish of the Italians,\u201d Marinetti wrote, enumerating eleven requirements for an ideal meal, including \u201charmony between table setting and food, the invention of food sculptures, and the use of scents, poetry, and music, as well as scientific instruments during preparation.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>This may not be a cause for pride, but we\u2019re proud of it nevertheless: two of the books in this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookforum.com\/booklist\/13429\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWeird Sex\u201d roundup<\/a> are by recent <em>Paris Review <\/em>interviewees Nicholson Baker and Samuel Delany. (On <em>House of Holes<\/em>: \u201cAmid the bathetic histrionics, <em>Holes<\/em> asserts a striking degree of tender, if debauched, humanity.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>New York has subways and buses, ferries and trams, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/sandbox\/projects\/nyc-dollar-vans\/\" target=\"_blank\">but it also has dollar vans<\/a>, a form of \u201cshadow transit\u201d operating \u201cmostly in peripheral, low-income neighborhoods that contain large immigrant communities and lack robust public transit.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Charlotte Bront\u00eb was thirteen and her brother, Branwell, was twelve, they designed and wrote a series of tiny books: \u201cMeasuring less than one inch by two inches, the books were made from scraps of paper and constructed by hand.
