Via Wellcome Library.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>A report by British dermatologists makes the audacious claim that Shakespeare is responsible for Western society\u2019s obsession with clear skin.\u00a0\u201cShakespeare\u2019s works have survived the intervening centuries; has his success led to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-out-damned-spot-is-shakespeare-at-fault-for-zitaversion-20140701-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">the perpetuation of Elizabethan negativity toward skin disease?<\/a>\u201d Apparently, too many of his plays feature insults about skin disease\u2014poxes, boils, carbuncles, moles, blots, blemishes, plagues\u2014an excess of abscesses, a sebaceous surfeit.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOne of the most intriguing questions I get from readers of my movie reviews is: \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/movies\/2014\/06\/transformers-and-independent-film.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\">But did you like the film<\/a>?\u2019 \u2026 The binary scale of good and bad, like and dislike, is essentially pointless. Movies are complex experiences\u2014even those that are simplistic or clumsily made are rich in substance\u2014and sometimes criticism is like the science of medicine, with advances coming from diagnoses of some dread disease that you wouldn\u2019t want to have.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/navigation\/books-and-culture\/dozen-words-misunderstood-language-linguistics-79600\/\" target=\"_blank\">A linguist\u2019s cri de coeur<\/a>: death to Whorfianism! \u201cWhat Whorfianism claims, in its strongest form, is that our thoughts are limited and shaped by the specific words and grammar we use\u201d\u2014but linguists have found only \u201cfairly negligible differences \u2026 between language speakers.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>These <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sadanduseless.com\/2014\/06\/odd-russian-cinema-posters\/\" target=\"_blank\">hand-painted posters from Russian cinemas<\/a> make movies like <em>Shrek 2 <\/em>and <em>50 First Dates<\/em> look like surrealist masterworks.<\/li>\n<li>You can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/laura-palmers-house-twin-peaks-sale-206429?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialMarketing&amp;utm_campaign=Default:2:Default\" target=\"_blank\">live in the house from <em>Twin Peaks<\/em><\/a>.
