But are their reasons for drinking different? And how about society\u2019s responses, particularly in the lubricated, tipsy twentieth century; the golden age, if one can call it that, of alcohol and the writer?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Among the artists to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/index.php\/2014\/06\/13\/vintage-hobbit-illustrations\/?utm_content=buffer25525&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">illustrated international editions of <em>The Hobbit<\/em><\/a> over the years: Tove Jansson, Maurice Sendak, and Tolkien himself.<\/li>\n<li>No one can explain the success of \u201cA Dark Room,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/elements\/2014\/06\/a-dark-room-the-best-selling-game-that-no-one-can-explain.html\" target=\"_blank\">a best-selling game composed of words and not much else<\/a>\u2014harking back to the earliest computer games of the seventies. \u201cThese language games draw on a tradition of using language patterns as a form of play that precedes computers by thousands of years, something to which more recent video games remain indebted.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Look to 1984\u2014the year, not the novel\u2014for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2014\/06\/a-strange-but-true-tale-of-voter-fraud-and-bioterrorism\/372445\/\" target=\"_blank\">a curious episode from the annals of bioterrorism<\/a>: \u201cIn rural Oregon, a small religious sect led by an Indian mystic was busy organizing a massive voter-fraud campaign that nearly enabled it to take over an entire county \u2026 The Rajneeshees would try to depress turnout among regular voters by poisoning thousands of residents with Salmonella.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Journalists reporting from more than ninety countries are collaborating on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.decastories.com\/concept\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new project called Deca<\/a>: \u201cOnce a month, Deca publishes a nonfiction story about the world.
