Shortly afterward, in a rare case of felicitous nepotism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openlettersmonthly.com\/absent-friends-lean-years-of-plenty\/\" target=\"_blank\">he hired his wife Katherine Mansfield to be its fiction reviewer<\/a> \u2026 from her very first column she\u2019s frank about the terrible ephemerality of most fiction, and the trap both reviewers and readers can fall into by hitching themselves to a brand new novel\u2019s rapidly dying star \u2026 Mansfield openly wonders why anyone should bother with new novels at all.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Eugene Goostman, a computer program masquerading as a thirteen-year-old Ukrainian boy, has become <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/computer-becomes-first-to-pass-turing-test-in-artificial-intelligence-milestone-but-academics-warn-of-dangerous-future-9508370.html\" target=\"_blank\">the first artificial intelligence to pass the Turing Test<\/a>: in five-minute text conversations, it fooled more than 30 percent of humans into thinking it was a person.<\/li>\n<li>Why did a beluga whale named Noc try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/story-one-whale-who-tried-bridge-linguistic-divide-between-animals-humans-180951437\/?no-ist\" target=\"_blank\">to emulate human speech<\/a>? \u201cHe sounds, on first hearing, at least, less like a person talking than a delirious drunk humming an atonal tune through a tissue-covered comb \u2026 But the science behind Noc\u2019s mimicry and its apparent motives reveals something far more urgent and haunting: the spectral outpourings of a young white whale calling to us across both time and the vast linguistic divide between humans and the other animals.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And while we\u2019re discussing animals, \u201cWhat kind of a person looks upon the world\u2019s largest land animal\u2014a beast that mourns its dead and lives to retirement age and can distinguish the voice of its enemies\u2014and instead of saying \u2018Wow!\u2019 says something like \u2018Where&#8217;s my gun?\u2019\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gq.com\/long-form\/who-wants-to-shoot-an-elephant\" target=\"_blank\">Wells Tower reports from one of the last elephant hunts in Botswana<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/culturebox\/2014\/06\/sex_and_pop_the_forgotten_1909_hit_that_introduced_adultery_to_american.html\" target=\"_blank\">most transgressive song of 1909<\/a>: \u201cIf we listen closely to \u2018I Love, I Love, I Love My Wife\u2014But Oh!
