Back then, he still existed outside the official system. Too difficult, too scandalous for school. It was still possible for teenagers to read Joyce as an act of rebellion against teachers, government, church. You read Joyce the way you listened to late punk, or early rap.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/117881\/why-do-people-call-significant-others-baby?utm_content=buffer0b46f&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">What\u2019s the point of infantilizing pet names<\/a>? \u201cIn the mid-twentieth century, Austrian ethologist Konrad Lorenz proposed that babies\u2019 cuteness is an evolutionarily advantageous adaptation without which they wouldn\u2019t survive; adults need some sort of incentive to provide them with constant care, and Lorenz thought that motive was admiring their cuteness. He believed men carry this preference into adulthood by looking for women who retain elements of babyish \u2018cuteness.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The story of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/scholars-detective-work-uncovers-masterpiece-freer-gallery-180951442\/?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;no-ist\" target=\"_blank\">an art historian\u2019s shrewd detective work<\/a>: \u201cA supposedly minor work from the Qing dynasty turned out to be a masterpiece nearly 700 years old.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 2012, before Kara Walker\u2019s exhibition arrived there, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/photobooth\/2014\/05\/inside-the-domino-sugar-factory.html?utm_source=tny&amp;utm_campaign=generalsocial&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;mbid=social_twitter#slide_ss_0=1\" target=\"_blank\">David Allee photographed Brooklyn\u2019s dilapidated Domino Sugar Factory<\/a>. \u201cWhile his pictures could not convey the smell of the factory\u2014\u2018cr\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e mixed with mold and rot\u2019\u2014he hoped to communicate something about its complicated history \u2026 Inside the prison-like spaces, there was also \u2018a visceral sense that the work that took place here was torturous.\u2019 At the same time, he said, \u2018everything is literally sugar coated.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the sixties, TV and film writers dreamed up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/monoliths-17-supercomputers-60s-204736?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialMarketing&amp;utm_campaign=Default:2:Default\" target=\"_blank\">a bunch of supercomputers with one thing in common<\/a>: they were hell-bent on annihilating humanity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Julian Gough\u2019s celebration of Joyce wins the award for Title of the Year: \u201cJames Joyce: You can\u2019t ignore the bastard.\u201d \u201cJoyce entered your life very differently in rural Ireland in the early 1980s.
