Krumbach is an Austrian market town with a population of about one thousand\u2014it has a handsome eleventh-century castle and, as of this year, seven of the most arresting bus stops in the world<\/a>. As part of a new project, BUS:STOP, seven international architects have designed Buswarteh\u00fcsle<\/em>\u2014small shelters\u2014\u201cin a dialogue with the people, landscape, and local culture, building upon the traditions of skilled trade in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sou Fujimoto calls his stop, pictured above, \u201ca transparent forest of columns,\u201d and emphasizes its variousness as a public space: \u201cBoth bus passengers and non\u2013bus users can use this bus stop as a meeting point,\u201d he writes, and though maybe no human alive has ever actively identified as a \u201cnon\u2013bus user,\u201d his larger point rings true: \u201cEveryone may climb the tower-like bus stop to enjoy panoramic views of Krumbach.\u201d<\/p>\n

The other contributing architects hail from Belgium, Chile, Russia, Norway, Spain, and China, and given the impressive designs they\u2019ve brought, it\u2019s hard to fault Krumbach\u2019s official culture site<\/a> for a bit of characteristically Teutonic rhetoric: \u201cPeople from the Bregenzerwald are generally seen as proud of their roots and open to new ideas. This has shaped our region down to the present day: the collaboration between humankind and nature, tradition and modernism, handcraft and the culture of building.\u201d<\/p>\n

DesignBoom has a gallery of photographs<\/a> worth viewing in full. One might object to the primacy of form over function here. It\u2019s hard to picture someone comfortably waiting at Fujimoto\u2019s shelter, for instance, especially if it\u2019s raining. But none of these stops are entirely without utility: they are all, however tenuously, places where you go to catch a bus. I\u2019ve tried in vain to find statistics on public transit in Krumbach\u2014how many of its thousand citizens use the bus system, anyway?\u2014but even if these shelters are seldom used, it\u2019s still a pleasure to imagine them out there, flecking the Austrian countryside. Greyhound: take notes.<\/p>\n
