href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/romantics-and-victorians\" target=\"_blank\">Discovering Literature<\/a>, an online collection of more than 1,200 items from the Romantic and Victorian periods, all of it meant to arouse interest in classic English lit. There are manuscript pages and juvenilia from Jane Austen, the Bront\u00eb sisters, Keats, Wordsworth, and Blake, among others, but the diligent forager will find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/collection-items\/1857-edition-of-aesops-fables\" target=\"_blank\">Charles H. Bennett\u2019s vivid illustrations for <em>Aesop\u2019s Fables<\/em><\/a>; more than twenty-five drawings from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/collection-items\/london-illustrations-by-gustave-dor\" target=\"_blank\">Gustave Dor\u00e9\u2019s <em>London: A Pilgrimage<\/em><\/a>; nineteenth-century <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/collection-items\/19th-century-medical-views-on-female-sexuality\" target=\"_blank\">gynecological gaffes<\/a> (\u201cthe majority of women [happily for them] are not very much troubled by sexual feeling of any kind\u201d); and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/collection-items\/varney-an-early-vampire-story\" target=\"_blank\">early vampire stories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There\u2019s also this: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/collection-items\/the-yellow-book\" target=\"_blank\">The Yellow Book<\/a><\/em>. Not to be confused with the Yellow Pages or <em>Redbook<\/em>, <em>The Yellow Book<\/em> was an illustrated quarterly magazine with a provocative name; it came<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">from the notorious covering into which controversial French novels were placed at the time. It is, in fact, a \u201cyellow book\u201d which corrupts Dorian in Wilde\u2019s original novel; this generally thought to be Joris-Karl Huysmans\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/collection-items\/decadent-novel-a-rebours-or-against-nature\" target=\"_blank\"><em>A Rebours<\/em><\/a> (1884).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The founding principles were that literature and art should be treated independently and given equal status, and Aubrey Beardsley, illustrator of Wilde\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/collection-items\/aubrey-beardsley-illustrations-for-salome-by-oscar-wilde\" target=\"_blank\">Salom\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was appointed art editor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Indeed, when Wilde was arrested in 1895, there were rumours he had been carrying a yellow-bound book. Though this was actually Pierre Lou\u00ffs\u2019s French novel <em>Aphrodite<\/em>, a confused crowd thought it was a copy of this magazine, and gathered to throw stones at the publishers\u2019 offices.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Those were the days, when the mere sight of a literary quarterly, or even something resembling a literary quarterly, could move a crowd to violence. <em>The Yellow Book <\/em>was published for only a few years, from 1894 to 1897, but it loomed large; nearly a century later, the scholar Linda Dowling called it \u201ccommercially the most ambitious and typographically the most important of the 1890s periodicals. [It] gave the fullest expression to the double resistance of graphic artists against literature, and Art against commerce, the double struggle symbolized by the paired words on the contents-pages of the Yellow Books: Letterpress and Pictures, Literature and Art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, the British Library launched Discovering Literature, an online collection of more than 1,200 items from the Romantic and Victorian periods, all of it meant to arouse interest in classic English lit.
