href=\"http:\/\/publicdomainreview.org\/2014\/05\/14\/in-the-image-of-god-john-comenius-and-the-first-childrens-picture-book\/\" target=\"_blank\">the first children\u2019s picture book<\/a>: <em>Orbis Sensualium Pictus<\/em>, or <em>The World of Things Obvious to the Senses Drawn in Pictures<\/em>. \u201cThe <em>Orbis<\/em>\u2014with its 150 pictures showing everyday activities like brewing beer, tending gardens, and slaughtering animals\u2014is immediately familiar as an ancestor of today\u2019s children\u2019s literature.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Behind Alex Trebek\u2019s veneer of erudition is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/117694\/alex-trebek-last-king-american-middlebrow?utm_content=buffer932d7&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">an everyman, a heavy drinker, a handyman<\/a>: \u201cTrebek says that when he gets up in the middle of the night\u2014he has terrible insomnia\u2014he will lie awake for hours plotting how to fix the sliver of light peeking through his window, and all the other home-repair projects he wants to tackle next.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThroughout cult-movie history, the American cheerleader has come to stand for something demonic, bitchy, slutty, and secretly lesbian, resulting in an archetype as American as apple pie, football, and well, cheerleading itself: <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/thecut\/2014\/05\/subversive-sexy-cheerleaders-a-visual-history.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Subversive Cheerleader Genre<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Cell-phone novels, stories serialized in short bursts, have consistently appeared on Japan\u2019s best-seller lists for years; now a few developers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/indiereader\/cell-phone-novels_b_5332043.html?&amp;ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000031\" target=\"_blank\">are attempting to popularize them in America<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Amazon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/amazon-said-to-play-hardball-in-book-contract-talks-with-publishing-house-hachette\/2014\/05\/16\/cdd40854-dc62-11e3-8009-71de85b9c527_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">puts the squeeze on Hachette<\/a>: \u201cHachette, which owns Little, Brown; Hyperion; and Grand Central, says that Amazon is deliberately slowing sales of Hachette\u2019s books in
