Ellen Faran, who has an MBA from Harvard and is the director of MIT Press, recently told <em>Harvard Magazine<\/em>: \u2018I like doing things that are impossible, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/179712\/university-presses-under-fire?page=full\" target=\"_blank\">there\u2019s nothing more impossible than university-press publishing<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Almost every book set in Africa seems to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2014\/05\/why-every-book-about-africa-has-the-same-cover\/362101\/\" target=\"_blank\">the same cover art<\/a>: \u201can acacia tree, an orange sunset over the veld, or both \u2026 the covers of most novels \u2018about Africa\u2019 seem to have been designed by someone whose principal idea of the continent comes from\u00a0<em>The Lion King<\/em>.\u201d (Plug: Norman Rush\u2019s <em>Whites<\/em>, <em>Mating<\/em>, and <em>Mortals<\/em>, all set in Botswana and all excellent, have acacia-free covers.)<\/li>\n<li>Why have we ceased to eat swans? \u201cOften served at feasts, <a href=\"http:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2014\/05\/come\/\" target=\"_blank\">roast swan was a favored dish in the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I<\/a>, particularly when skinned and redressed in its feathers and served with a yellow pepper sauce.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Midcentury Vancouver \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_vault\/2014\/05\/13\/photos_neon_signs_of_mid_century_vancouver.html\" target=\"_blank\">had the second-most neon signs per capita on the globe, after Shanghai<\/a> \u2026 neon signs fell victim to a \u2018visual purity crusade\u2019 in the 1960s. Critics thought that the neon cheapened the look of the streets, and obscured Vancouver\u2019s natural beauty. (\u2018We\u2019re being led by the nose into a hideous jungle of signs,\u2019 wrote a critic in the <em>Vancouver Sun<\/em>\u2014a newspaper whose headquarters was prominently bedecked in neon\u2014in 1966. \u2018They\u2019re outsized, outlandish, and outrageous.\u2019)\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aesop.com\/usa\/the-fabulist\/richard-hamilton\/\" target=\"_blank\">Remembering the artist Richard Hamilton<\/a>: \u201cOne evening, Hamilton told me he had developed a method for photographing the toaster prints, so as not to interrupt the surface with his own reflection: he would move his tripod off to one side to take the picture, later returning each image to its original orientation using Photoshop.
