In a culture driven to render us ever more transparent to one another, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/2014\/03\/private-parts-writers-and-battle-our-inner-lives\" target=\"_blank\">literature and art may be among the few spaces in which to keep hold of this understanding of the private self<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/movies\/2014\/05\/spectacles-superhero-movies-filmmaking.html\" target=\"_blank\">the disappearance of spectacular cinema<\/a>: \u201cAs the bulk of filmmaking has shifted away from studio productions and virtually all movies except for franchises have become, in effect, independent films, movies have fallen into conflicting extremes of artifice and of reality, and the idea of reality has become a sort of critical cult.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe first indigenous tribes Christopher Columbus encountered on the island he named Hispaniola had developed a unique method for cooking meat over an indirect flame, created using green wood to keep the food (and wood) from burning. Reports indicate that the Spanish referred to this new style of cooking as barbacoa: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/the-evolution-of-american-barbecue-13770775\/\" target=\"_blank\">the original barbecue<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/behold\/2014\/05\/04\/fabrice_fouillet_photographs_giant_monuments_in_his_series_colosses_photos.html\" target=\"_blank\">These statues<\/a> are very, very, arrestingly large.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The secret libraries of New York.
