The centerpiece of the shindig was the deceased herself\u2014propped up in full regalia and makeup, just as in life. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2613964\/The-partys-not-quite-Famed-New-Orleans-social-dame-attends-funeral-extravaganza-cocktail-frock-smoking-cigarette-drinking-champagne.html\" target=\"_blank\">Reports the <em>Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>, with photos,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The consummate hostess, she was never without her glass of champagne or cigarette holder, and wore a flamboyant feather boa, bonnet, and a diamond-studded brooch that said \u2018Bitch\u2019 \u2026 To Easterling\u2019s right, on a small table, sat a bottle of her favorite Champagne\u2014Veuve Clicquot\u2014as well as a pack of American Spirit cigarettes, and in her right hand was a Waterford crystal Champagne flute, the kind she used to carry around with her sometimes when restaurant glassware wouldn\u2019t suffice.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While the spectacle was, it must be said, somewhat macabre, it was not unprecedented. In a recent piece titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/dead-people-life-poses-funerals\/story?id=23456853\" target=\"_blank\">Dead People Get Life-Like Poses at Their Funerals<\/a>,\u201d ABC News chronicles the practice of \u201cExtreme Embalming\u201d\u2014which sounds far too much like the world\u2019s most horrifying reality show. ABC cites three other cases: just enough to make the \u201ctrend\u201d cutoff. It is, needless to say, still a fringe practice. Says one Pennsylvania mortician, \u201cMost funeral homes, the most extreme thing they might do is dressing the deceased in shorts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Personally, I take a live and let live\u2014or its converse, I guess\u2014approach to these matters. One can\u2019t help but wonder if close encounters with the extreme embalmed might have unfortunate, <em>Three Faces of Eve<\/em>\u2013style consequences for children of an impressionable age. But then, there are worse things than mementi mori.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For many years, Mickey Easterling kept company with the composer and writer Paul Bowles. In his classic 1949 novel <em>The Sheltering Sky<\/em>, Bowles gives us one of the most trenchant of assertions on the subject of mortal coils.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Death is always on the way, but the fact that you don\u2019t know when it will arrive seems to take away from the finiteness of life. It\u2019s that terrible precision that we hate so much. But because we don\u2019t know, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that\u2019s so deeply a part of your being that you can\u2019t even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more. Perhaps not even. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Says Easterling\u2019s daughter, \u201cIt\u2019s a really nice way to say,\u2018The party\u2019s
