His essay was recently nominated for a James Beard Award.<\/li>\n<li>And here\u2019s Charlotte Strick, our art editor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsgworkinprogress.com\/2014\/04\/a-new-birthday-suit-for-bernard\/\" target=\"_blank\">interviewed about her sharp new designs for the Bernard Malamud centenary<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>While we\u2019re at it, <em>Daily<\/em> contributor Caleb Crain has asked, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/books\/2014\/04\/how-much-gay-sex-should-a-novel-have.html\" target=\"_blank\">how much gay sex should a novel have?<\/a>\u201d (\u201cThe half answer, half protest that immediately springs to mind is, <em>It depends<\/em>. Many are the conditions that it depends upon.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>And <em>Daily<\/em> contributor Willie Osterweil found that today\u2019s sports movies have comparatively few feats of athleticism in them. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/america.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2014\/4\/sports-managementmoviemilliondollararmmoneyball.html\" target=\"_blank\">There\u2019s a new breed of sports movie in town<\/a>, one that does away with all that pesky team-building and ersatz democracy. These films celebrate the real heroes of sports, the real heroes of any workplace: the bosses.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/04\/27\/the_lost_art_of_memorizing_poetry_partner\/\" target=\"_blank\">The lost art of memorizing poetry<\/a>: \u201cMany of today\u2019s prominent poets seem to be writing poems that actively resist memorization. Take John Ashbery, for example \u2026 As I walked uphill, repeating Ashbery\u2019s lines to myself, I found them as slippery as an eel.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Why do we tend to place <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2014\/apr\/26\/pain-and-parentheses\/\" target=\"_blank\">painful episodes in parentheses<\/a>? A variety of literature has \u201cwindows in a wall of verse or prose that suddenly open on an expanse of personal pain.
