A letter from 1938 suggests the scope of their creative frictions: \u201cHere you have a young girl,\u201d Wilder\u2019s daughter wrote to her about one character, \u201ca girl twelve years old, who\u2019s led a rather isolated life with father, mother, sisters in the country, and you can not have her suddenly acting like a slum child who has protected her virginity from street gangs since she was seven or eight.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>What was in your average <a href=\"http:\/\/theappendix.net\/blog\/2013\/11\/the-cosmonauts-survival-kit\" target=\"_blank\">Soviet cosmonaut\u2019s survival kit<\/a> circa 1968? Among other specialties: three balaclavas, a tripartite rifle\/shotgun\/flare-gun, and a pistol intended to frighten \u201cwolves, bears, tigers, etc.\u201d in the event of a crash landing.<\/li>\n<li>A new app called Cloak helps you \u201cavoid exes, co-workers, that guy who likes to stop and chat\u2014anyone you\u2019d rather not run into.\u201d Which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/elements\/2014\/04\/the-antisocial-media-app.html\" target=\"_blank\">makes life a bit more miserable<\/a>, it turns out: \u201c\u2018All Clear: There\u2019s nobody nearby\u2019 reads like such a strange, sad message, such a lonely thing to have achieved through technological control of our social environments.
