Furthermore, Mary encouraged the siblings to regard each other as \u2018lovers,\u2019 and to think of her as their \u2018lover,\u2019 too.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the Paris of the eighteenth century, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/history\/2014\/04\/elite_prostitutes_in_18th_century_paris_and_the_detectives_who_watched_their.single.html\" target=\"_blank\">elite prostitutes were monitored by the fuzz<\/a>\u2014but why? \u201cA final and enduring theory is that the reports were meant as bedtime reading for King Louis XV and his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour, who had been the protector of the police lieutenant general most responsible for establishing the unit in the first place. According to this theory, the reports were meant to enliven the reputedly jaded, enervated royal sex life.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Japanese astronauts took some cherry pits into space. Now, one of them has grown into a mighty cherry tree, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/elements\/2014\/04\/the-amazing-tale-of-the-cherry-pit-from-space.html\" target=\"_blank\">perhaps with superpowers<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/theholenearthecenteroftheworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adventure Time<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/theholenearthecenteroftheworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> is a smash hit cartoon<\/a> aimed primarily at kids age six to eleven. It\u2019s also a deeply serious work of moral philosophy, a rip-roaring comic masterpiece, and a meditation on gender politics and love in the modern world.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI can\u2019t articulate exactly what it was that turned <a href=\"http:\/\/thehairpin.com\/2014\/04\/fantasy-on-wheels-my-roller-rink-sexual-awakening\/\" target=\"_blank\">the roller rink into fantasy-on-wheels for me<\/a> \u2026 the feelings I sought only came from visits to those dingy rinks\u2014their smell of ashtrays, sweat, and desolation. In retrospect, part of what I craved was the roller rink\u2019s ability to detach me from the everyday.
