One of them? <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/during-cold-war-cia-used-doctor-zhivago-as-a-tool-to-undermine-soviet-union\/2014\/04\/05\/2ef3d9c6-b9ee-11e3-9a05-c739f29ccb08_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Doctor Zhivago<\/a><\/i>. According to a CIA memo, \u201cThis book has great propaganda value \u2026 not only for its intrinsic message and thought-provoking nature, but also for the circumstances of its publication: we have the opportunity to make Soviet citizens wonder what is wrong with their government, when a fine literary work by the man acknowledged to be the greatest living Russian writer is not even available in his own country in his own language for his own people to read.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-tls.co.uk\/tls\/public\/article1394977.ece\" target=\"_blank\">Remembering the poet Ian Hamilton and the <i>New Review<\/i><\/a>, which was, \u201cdepending on your point of view, either the best literary periodical of the past fifty years or an elitist folly lavishly bankrolled by the taxpayer.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 1893, W. Cade Gall published the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/publicdomainreview.org\/collections\/fashions-of-the-future-as-imagined-in-1893\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future Dictates of Fashion<\/a>,\u201d in which he speculated as to the garb of years to come, all the way up to 1993. His conjectures were \u2026 wildly inaccurate.<\/li>\n<li>Difficult-to-parse news item of the day: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=11639&amp;utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\">A 49-year-old Santa Cruz man died late Thursday night while crossing Mission Street after being struck by a car<\/a>.\u201d \u201cPretty plucky of him to cross the street after he had been hit, I thought.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/apr\/08\/damien-hirst-criminal-past-autobiography\" target=\"_blank\">Damien Hirst is writing an autobiography<\/a>. \u201cIt will include a barely known first act\u2014a black and hilarious account of Hirst\u2019s youth, growing up in a semi-criminal, often violent milieu, while sharing with his friends\u00a0an unlikely, but binding passion for art.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The CIA used many strange tools to fight the commies.
