Before everyone gets too deep into March\u2014what with its Madness; its Ides; its suspicious \u201cin like a lion, out like a lamb\u201d mentality; its trying Lenten sacrifices; its Prince K\u016bhi\u014d Day<\/a>; blah, blah, blah\u2014let\u2019s not forget dear old February, arguably the most hated month, if not the cruelest. At only twenty-eight days, it always gets short shrift, even during leap years; it\u2019s as if we can\u2019t wait to wash our hands of it. Well, we\u2019re here to say: we\u2019re going to miss it. It was a fine month, one for the books, and we have proof\u2014below are some of the excellent long essays the Daily<\/em> published. Now, onward, to Saint Patrick\u2019s Day, Pi Day, National Potato Chip Day, and Save a Spider Day<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Sabine Heinlein<\/strong>: \u201cWe sat across from each other in a circle surrounded by several other convicted murderers and three Quakers who led the ministry. Richard looked ashen and frail<\/a>, and yet I could see something glowing in him.\u201d<\/p>\n

David Pablo Cohn<\/strong>: \u201cThey could just once utter that coveted phrase in a loud, authoritative but calm voice: \u2018Stand back, everyone\u2014I\u2019m a computer scientist<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Clifford Chase<\/strong>: \u201c\u2018You may hear a cracking sound<\/a>,\u2019 said the oral surgeon, who was also named Cliff. He was inserting a pair of pliers in my mouth. I heard the cracking. Occasionally life plunges you into an experience that, for its utter intensity and obscure resonance, may as well be a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rebecca Bengal<\/strong>: \u201cIn the midseventies demimonde of Memphis, things had a way of becoming totally and suddenly unhinged<\/a>, and McGill was frequently the author of their unhinging.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andy Battaglia<\/strong>: \u201c\u2019Pour it a little more aggressively,\u2019 he said through a mouthpiece to a production designer wetting the set with a strange, unidentified liquid. To the actress Ellen Burstyn, in the midst of a stubborn scene, he suggested, \u2018I think we should not smile<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharon Mesmer<\/strong>: \u201cI knew that the smudge was the result of the camera having been in motion when the photo was taken, but I felt that that smudge was my soul<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew Olshan<\/strong>: \u201cPeople think of Washington, D.C., as a transitory place\u2014a city of four-year leases, tourists, and revolving doors\u2014an impression that dates back to the earliest days of the federal capital. The city fathers, desperate to counter the District\u2019s reputation as a provincial backwater, fought back by building monuments<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam Leith Gollner<\/strong>: \u201cWhen we parted, on the boulevard du Montparnasse, I leaned over to give her a kiss on the cheek. \u2018If you do find paradise,\u2019 she said, turning to leave, \u2018send me a grape<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Edward McPherson<\/strong>: \u201cDuring the Civil War, St. Louis had slaves but was not southern. It is not western, like Kansas City, on the other side of the state, but it is not eastern, not really\u2014just ask any transplant from the coast. It truly is Middle American, whatever that means. There\u2019s the old joke: what kind of city would advertise itself as a jumping-off point<\/a>, an exit door, a gateway to somewhere else?\u201d<\/p>\n
