It closed in 1981. What you\u2019ll find there today: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/harpers.org\/blog\/2014\/02\/nothing-is-strange\/\" target=\"_blank\">A drab three-story cement building<\/a>. Outside \u2026 a restaurant had set up a <em>sampuru<\/em> display of plastic foods. Above it, an orange banner advertised DINING CAFE.\u201d Jazz!<\/li>\n<li>Tracking the <a href=\"http:\/\/publishingperspectives.com\/2014\/02\/tv-and-film-boost-sales-of-library-of-america-classics\/\" target=\"_blank\">fluctuating sales of Library of America classics<\/a>: \u201cWho would have thought that Ben Stiller\u2019s movie remake of <em>The Secret Life of Walter Mitty<\/em> would triple sales of the LOA\u2019s James Thurber edition. Or that the film version of <em>On the Road<\/em> would increase sales of the Kerouac volume that contains the novel by more than thirty percent?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em><\/em>While we\u2019re on Kerouac: a German college student took all the locations from <i>On the Road<\/i> and plugged them into Google Maps. The resulting driving directions\u2014<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2014\/02\/jack-kerouacs-on-the-road-turned-into-google-driving-directions.html\" target=\"_blank\">On the Road for 17,527 Miles<\/a><\/em>\u2014are available for free. My personal favorite part is \u201cTake exit 362 to merge onto I-180 N\/Interstate 25 Business\/US-85 N\/US 87 Business toward Central Ave.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A must for your reference shelf: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/browbeat\/2014\/02\/10\/prince_hairstyles_every_hairdo_from_1978_to_2013_in_one_illustrated_chart.html\" target=\"_blank\">every Prince hairstyle from 1978 to 2013<\/a>, in one easy-to-read (and purple, of course) chart.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Iowa Writers\u2019 Workshop: brought to you by the CIA.
