\"Mothers<\/a><\/p>\n

I received my first issue of Mothers News<\/a><\/i>\u00a0this week\u2014and now I wonder what I\u2019ve been doing with my life. A free monthly broadside out of Providence,\u00a0Mothers News<\/i>\u00a0is\u00a0hyper, delirious, and weird. And, I now realize, essential reading.\u00a0The eight-page rag\u00a0is\u00a0best known, and rightly so, for its comics\u2014with regular strips by C. F., Michael Deforge, Mickey Z, Brian Chippendale, and others\u2014but all the content is of a piece.\u00a0This issue manages, for instance, a column devoted to foam (\u201cWhat do we know about foam?\u201d\u2014quite a bit, it turns out); a top-ten list that includes a brief excursion into the etymology of \u201choist by my own petard\u201d; and an announcement that the UN has designated 2014 the International Year of Family Farming and Crystallography\u00a0(IYFF 2014 and\u00a0IYCr2014, respectively). There\u2019s also, of course,\u00a0the Ambrose Bierce Memorial Word Jumble and\u00a0a coveted ad from the Lon Chaney Society of New England. \u2014Nicole Rudick<\/b><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been dipping into T. D. Allman\u2019s Finding Florida: The True History of the Sunshine State<\/i><\/a>, whose bright jacket belies its sharp dressing-down of our twenty-seventh state. In Allman\u2019s telling, Florida is, and always has been, an accursed microcosm of the American dream\u2014from its geology to its politics to its economics, everything about the place invites delusion, violence, and disaster. Some critics found this too apocalyptic, but I think Allman\u2019s gloom is a valuable corrective, and he\u2019s far from humorless; even his bibliography has fizz. (\u201cWhere the Boys Are<\/i> [1960]. Groovy LA starlets play beach blanket bingo in Fort Lauderdale.\u201d) You can read Florida<\/i>, longlisted for last year\u2019s National Book Award, as an erudite complement to Florida Man<\/a>, a Twitter feed that lists the frighteningly constant stream of follies coming from the Sunshine State. The latest: \u201cFlorida Man Arrested for Beating Uncle with Toilet Seat.\u201d \u2014Dan Piepenbring<\/b><\/p>\n

Over the long weekend I went on a New Yorker<\/i> fiction binge and read every short story I\u2019d missed in 2013. Among the gems I\u2019d somehow overlooked: Tessa Hadley\u2019s impeccable \u201cBad Dreams,\u201d Thomas McGuane\u2019s \u201cWeight Watchers,\u201d and \u201cThe Christmas Miracle,\u201d by Rebecca Curtis, which is simply the funniest short story I have read in a year. It\u2019s easy to carp at The New Yorker<\/i>, because it\u2019s an institution, but forget that and read the stories first. From week to week, they are often as interesting, as much fun to read, as anything in the magazine. \u2014Lorin Stein<\/b> <\/p>\n

How often do you stumble across great new<\/i> science fiction? It\u2019s a genre that never gets the attention it deserves. All the more reason to delight in Jeff Vandermeer\u2019s Annihilation<\/i><\/a>, the first volume in his Southern Reach trilogy, which will be released throughout this year. The plot moves quickly and has all the fantastic elements you\u2019d ever want\u2014biological contaminants, peculiar creatures, mysterious deaths\u2014but it\u2019s the novel\u2019s unbearable dread that lingers with me days after I\u2019ve finished it. \u2014Justin Alvarez<\/b><\/p>\n

In love as I am with Ann Patchett\u2019s novels, I\u2019m especially compelled by her new collection of essays, This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage<\/i><\/a>. Patchett meditates on camping in a Winnebago, discovers her love of opera through her distaste for country music, and reconciles her Catholicism with her divorce. (As the title implies, her remarriage has been a happy one.) All this is suffused with the same quiet authority and lyricism that had me hooked at Bel Canto<\/i>. \u2014Rachel Abramowitz<\/b><\/p>\n
