Image via the Public Domain Review.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In college, I was excited to discover a student-produced, fly-by-night zine called \u201cFrom the Margins.\u201d I don\u2019t know what\u2019s more embarrassing: that I assumed it was devoted to marginalia or that I was seriously juiced about the idea. When I opened its creased, xeroxed pages, though, I found it was devoted not to literal margins but to my school\u2019s \u201cdisenfranchised peoples,\u201d most of whom struck me as too well-heeled to feel put out.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, this month has granted my wish: it\u2019s seen some great attention paid to margins, the kind on paper. Open Culture featured <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2014\/01\/fyodor-dostoevsky-draws-elaborate-doodles-in-his-manuscripts.html\">Dostoevsky\u2019s manuscript doodles<\/a>, which demonstrate not just his remarkable penmanship but also an affinity for faces and architecture. (The former, to no one\u2019s surprise, are deeply melancholy.) The Public Domain Review resurfaced some rainbow-colored beasts \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/publicdomainreview.org\/2014\/01\/09\/rainbow-coloured-beasts-from-15th-century-book-of-hours\/\">found in a book of hours attributed to an artist of the Ghent-Bruges school and dating from the late fifteenth century<\/a>,\u201d and Brain Pickings resurfaced a piece about Edgar Allan Poe, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/index.php\/2013\/09\/17\/edgar-allan-poe-marginalia\/\">history\u2019s greatest champion of marginalia<\/a>.\u201d Poe is indeed unreserved in his praise; he also suggests, \u201cIf you wish to forget anything upon the spot, make a note that this thing is to be remembered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oh, that Poe! He\u2019s a regular Mark Twain.<\/p>\n<p>Last, Sam Anderson and David Rees have defaced, or, uh, annotated, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2014\/01\/dumbest-thing-ever-scribbling-in-the-margins-of-dan-browns-inferno.html\">a copy of Dan Brown\u2019s <i>Inferno<\/i><\/a>, much to its benefit. There\u2019s a lot of comfort in seeing\u2014next to such atrocious lines of dialogue as \u201cDon\u2019t let her beauty fool you, she is a dangerous foe\u201d\u2014the red, hateful tendrils of a handwritten <small>EAT SHIT<\/small>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s exactly the sort of thing I\u2019d hoped to find in \u201cFrom the Margins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In college, I was excited to discover a student-produced, fly-by-night zine called \u201cFrom the Margins.\u201d I don\u2019t know what\u2019s more embarrassing: that I assumed it was devoted to marginalia or that I was seriously juiced about the idea.
