On the shortlist you\u2019ll find eviscerations of John le Carr\u00e9, Donna Tartt, and Morrissey, among others.<\/li>\n<li>While we\u2019re doing things we do every year, let\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/jan\/13\/publish-brand-literature-hilary-mantel-jk-rowling\" target=\"_blank\">mourn the slow disappearance of successful midlist authors<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>When did it become popular <a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=9712&amp;utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\">to call people losers<\/a>? Google knows.<\/li>\n<li>At the MLA conference\u2014regularly touted, no doubt, as the sexiest gathering in academe\u2014a titillating ad for a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/browbeat\/2014\/01\/13\/mla_sex_ad_on_craigslist_that_mock_interview_make_out_session_is_terrifying.html\" target=\"_blank\">mock-interview make-out session<\/a>\u201d has everyone buzzing and, with luck, making out.<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/books\/2014\/01\/first-thought-worst-thought.html\" target=\"_blank\">I sometimes think of social media as being like the terrible apparatus at the center of Kafka\u2019s \u2018In the Penal Colony<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s that time again: the annual Hatchet Job of the Year is coming, and critics have honed their wits all year in anticipation.
