The Kraus Project<\/em>, Jonathan Franzen\u2019s translation of three essays by the late Austrian writer Karl Kraus, has been nominated for a National Book Critics Circle award in criticism. An excerpt from the book, \u201cAgainst Heine,\u201d appeared in our Fall 2013 issue<\/a>, and several excerpts of that excerpt\u2014meta-excerpts, if you will\u2014made their way here to the Daily<\/em>. Winners will be announced on March 13; until then, to prevent the suspense from killing, maiming, or even laying a finger on you, breathe deeply and read Franzen\u2019s expansive notes on \u201cthe anal-retentive preciousness<\/a>\u201d of John Updike\u2019s prose; the externalities of Salinger\u2019s appeal to young readers<\/a>; the difficulties of translating German travel humor<\/a>; and the proper way to inflect harsh<\/i><\/a>.
