This year\u2019s anthology is titled <em>Some Kind of Beautiful Signal<\/em>, and it was edited by the translator Natasha Wimmer and the poet Jeffrey Yang. If you\u2019re like me, you\u2019re probably familiar with Wimmer\u2019s work on Roberto Bola\u00f1o\u2019s <em>2666<\/em> and <em>The Savage Detectives<\/em>, though Wimmer has also garnered praise for her translations of the novels by Mario Vargas Llosa. Last week, Wimmer was part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/08\/responding-to-lydia-davis-exercises-in-style\/\">collective response<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/author\/ldavis\/\">Lydia Davis\u2019s musings<\/a> on translating <em>Madame Bovary<\/em>. But this week, Wimmer has been blogging on the Center for the Art of Translation\u2019s Web site, where she <a href=\"http:\/\/catranslation.org\/blogpost\/natasha-wimmer-on-bioy-schweblin-and-argentine-cult-classics\">describes discovering the writing of Bioy Casares and his novel <em>The Invention of Morel<\/em><\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not only had I not read it, I\u2019m ashamed to say I hadn\u2019t even heard of it. As anyone with more than a passing acquaintance with Argentinian literature will tell you, this was a travesty. Once you\u2019ve read Borges, you read his great friend and collaborator, Bioy. The cult classic <em>The Invention of Morel<\/em> is perhaps the defining work of fantastic literature in Spanish, and as Rodrigo would say, fantastic literature may be the Argentinian literature par excellence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She also <a href=\"http:\/\/catranslation.org\/blogpost\/editors-week-interview-with-natasha-wimmer\">discusses an essay by Roberto Bola\u00f1o that appears in <em>Some Kind of Beautiful Signal<\/a><\/em>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Scott Esposito: Lastly, I wanted to ask you about the piece you translated for this volume, Roberto Bola\u00f1o\u2019s essay \u201cLa traduccion en un yunque,\u201d which you translated as \u201cTranslation Is a Testing Ground.\u201d It\u2019s an interesting piece about the limits of translation, which it illustrates by talking about those authors who will and can be translated versus those who can\u2019t or won\u2019t. What was the thought-process that got you from \u201cyunque\u201d to \u201ctesting ground\u201d? And did your own extensive experience with translation inform your decision to go for this interpretation of \u201cyunque\u201d? <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Natasha Wimmer: \u201cYunque\u201d means \u201canvil,\u201d so the suggestion is that translation is the anvil on which literature is tested. If it\u2019s good enough, it will survive even the worst translation, or the most brutal pounding of the hammer. It seemed to me that the meaning of \u201cLa traducci\u00f3n es un yunque\u201d was more immediately obvious in Spanish than in English, so I gave the title an interpretive rather than a literal translation. In retrospect, though, I wonder whether it wouldn\u2019t have been better to leave it as \u201cTranslation is an Anvil,\u201d which also (it occurs to me now) suggests that translation is a heavy weight falling from a great height on a poor unsuspecting text. Maybe I\u2019ll change it for the book version (the essay will be published in the forthcoming collection <em>Between Parentheses<\/em>)\u2014check in and see!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The anthology offers a few <a href=\"http:\/\/catranslation.org\/two-lines\">online morsels<\/a>, but the physical edition is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Beautiful-Signal-Lines-Writing-Translation\/dp\/1931883173\">worth considering<\/a>. Not only is it printed multilingually (which I love as a reader), but it includes as many as fifteen different languages, including Zapotec and Uyghur!
