After Laurie left, Lou Reed would continue reading the <em>New York Times<\/em>, then look around the caf\u00e9 to see if there was anyone who hadn\u2019t noticed him. If there was, he\u2019d slowly get up, saunter over, and tap them on the shoulder. \u201cHey. Hey listen. You got a cigarette?\u201d The casual <em>no, no, sorry<\/em> was then followed by a visible <em>HOLY SHIT! IT\u2019S LOU REED<\/em>, as he leaned over them with solicitous menace. If they looked sufficiently disturbed, he\u2019d whisper, \u201cCould you go get me one?\u201d They sometimes did.<\/p>\n<p>The tenderness and mercy and wonder of songs like \u201cI\u2019ll Be Your Mirror\u201d and \u201cPale Blue Eyes\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m Set Free\u201d wasn&#8217;t always easy to find in the geezer who seemed to have more ways of saying <em>fuck you<\/em> to well-wishers and critics alike than Eskimos have words for snow. But if you could get him talking about Doc Pomus or Dion or Bob B. Soxx &amp; the Blue Jeans, the light of the true believer would shine in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>At Jenni Muldaur\u2019s birthday party last year, she had an old Victrola set up, and I brought a box of forty-fives&mdash;the Bobby Fuller Four, the Drifters, the Hombres, the Shirelles, Nervous Norvus. Lou Reed started looking through them admiringly. He stopped when he got to the Jaynetts&#8217; \u201cSally Go \u2019Round the Roses,\u201d holding it up like you would the Holy Grail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love that record,&#8221; I murmured.<\/p>\n<p>He tilted his head and gave me a look equal parts <em>who the fuck asked you?<\/em> and <em>me too, me too!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you say good-bye to Lou Reed?
