One day, Ms. C. handed out xeroxed maps of New York City and asked us to trace Holden Caulfield\u2019s path through New York. We did.\u00a0\u201cDo you see the pattern?\u201d she kept asking excitedly. \u201c<em>Do you see what it\u2019s all pointing to<\/em>?\u201d No one did. \u201cHe\u2019s heading <em>home<\/em>! He\u2019s circling around <em>home<\/em>!\u201d she finally shouted, exasperated. We were collectively underwhelmed. I suspect Holden Caulfield might have been, too.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe our teacher was onto something, though: in a sense, she was urging us to do the same thing Becky Cooper conceived of in her collaborative art project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/index.php\/2013\/04\/02\/mapping-manhattan-becky-cooper\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Mapping Manhattan<\/em><\/a>, now collected in a book. A range of New Yorkers\u2014artists, writers, thinkers, kooks\u2014present maps colored (in some cases literally) by their personal experiences. The results are as wide-ranging and fascinating as one might expect.
