The excerpt appeared as a short story titled \u201cThe Mexican Girl\u201d and, after much acclaim, was picked up a year later by Martha Foley\u2019s <em>The Best American Short Stories<\/em>. Due in large part to the success of \u201cThe Mexican Girl,\u201d <em>On the Road<\/em> was soon accepted by Viking Press; the full novel was published in 1957.<\/p>\n<p>The issue containing Kerouac\u2019s excerpt\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/back-issues\/11\"><em>The Paris Review<\/em> no. 11<\/a> (Winter 1955)\u2014has long since sold out, but we\u2019re happy to announce that it\u2019s now available in digital form via the <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/gb\/app\/the-paris-review\/id563187683\"><em>Paris Review<\/em> app<\/a>. For those interested in our hard-to-find archival issues, we\u2019ve also digitized issues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/back-issues\/1\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/back-issues\/18\">18<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/back-issues\/20\">20<\/a>, and many more are on the way.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, for the next two weeks, readers who purchase a digital subscription via the <em>Paris Review<\/em> app will receive free digital access to the issue containing Kerouac\u2019s excerpt. Alongside \u201cThe Mexican Girl\u201d are stories by Gerard Reve and Marjorie Housepian, an interview with Nelson Algren, portfolios by Antoni Clav\u00e9 and Oskar Kokoschka, and poetry by Louis Simpson, John Hollander, W.\u2009S. Merwin, Rolf Fjelde, Christopher Logue, and John Haislip.
