So absorbing I woke up thinking about it this morning, showered and shaved, and stepped back into the shower. (\u201cYou\u2019re wet. You showered,\u201d was my first non-Baldwin thought of the day.) \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe First Tycoon of Teen,\u201d Tom Wolfe\u2019s 1964 <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=QwyU4YsvLsEC&#038;pg=PA57&#038;dq=Tom+Wolfe+First+Tycoon+of+Teen&#038;hl=en&#038;ei=2nyTTIP-BsL98Aa4lMWNDA&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=book_result&#038;ct=result&#038;resnum=2&#038;ved=0CC0Q6AEwAQ#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">profile<\/a> of pop wunderkind Phil Spector\u2014\u201cthe first millionaire businessman to rise up out of the teen-age netherworld.\u201d At 23, Spector had already produced \u201cZip-a-dee-doo-dah,\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s a Rebel,\u201d \u201cBe My Baby,\u201d \u201cDa Do Ron Ron,\u201d \u201cThen He Kissed Me,\u201d \u201cUptown,\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019ve Lost That Lovin\u2019 Feelin.\u201d \u201cI get a little angry when people say it&#8217;s bad music,\u201d Spector tells Wolfe. \u201cIt has limited chord changes, and people are always saying the words are banal and why doesn&#8217;t anybody write lyrics like Cole Porter anymore, but we don\u2019t have presidents like Lincoln anymore either.\u201d <strong>\u2014David Wallace-Wells<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A recent poem from <em>The New Yorker<\/em> called,\u00a0\u201cOn the Inevitable Decline Into Mediocrity of the Popular Musician Who Attains a Comfortable Middle Age.\u201d It goes: \u201cO Sting, where is thy death?\u201d \u2014<strong>Daisy Atterbury<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the midst of a renewed discussion about female writers and their relationship with the literary establishment, This Recording re-published a piece written by Margaret Atwood in 1976 entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thisrecording.com\/today\/2010\/8\/29\/in-which-we-change-diapers-and-collect-china.html\">On Being A &#8216;Woman Writer<\/a>.\u2019\u201d Atwood is clear, calm, thorough and undeniably relevant: it wasn&#8217;t until I got to the bottom of the essay that I realized the piece was over thirty years old. \u2014<strong>Miranda Popkey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> Elif Batuman\u2019s astounding \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v32\/n18\/elif-batuman\/get-a-real-degree\">Get A Real Degree<\/a>\u201d in the <em>London Review of Books<\/em>, which begins as an focused inquiry into the MFA program microculture but expands outward and outward and outward again, until the entire horizon of post-Quixote literature has been pulled into view. <strong>\u2014D. W.-W.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I recently watched <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Red-Stuff-Story-Russian-Space\/dp\/B00008DDRG\">The Red Stuff<\/a><\/em>, a documentary about the Soviet Union\u2019s race to space. It\u2019s bizarre to see Russian astronauts, especially those now past their prime and overweight, surrounded by Russian space memorabilia. But what I wanna know? Space ice cream. Do the Russians now sell it at their science museums like we do? Also recently viewed: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imax.com\/hubble\/\">IMAX: Hubble 3D<\/a><\/em>, about the last flight to the Hubble Space Telescope. The images of earth are so beautiful that I cried. \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/154146\/no-name-or-too-many\">mesmerizing essay<\/a> in <em>The Nation<\/em> on Javier Mar\u00edas and his <em>Your Face Tomorrow<\/em> trilogy by the man I&#8217;m beginning to think is the best critic writing today, William Deresiewicz. \u201cMar\u00edas\u2019s Europeanness is of the autumnal variety, much in evidence in recent decades, the product of a ripened civilization that feels itself equipped for nothing but the harvest,&#8221; Deresiewicz writes. \u201cReflection in James or Proust,\u201d he continues, \u201cisn&#8217;t a commentary on the story; it is essential to the story. It hugs the plot like a lining of a coat. It exposes character, develops relationships, shapes action. It gives utterance to feeling and direction to choice. It evolves, as the protagonists themselves evolve. But reflection in <em>Your Face Tomorrow<\/em> rarely does any of those things; it simply sits alone in its study, watching the plot go by.\u201d \u2014<strong>D.
