I read it in a single sitting and came out feeling like the author was an old friend, and with a serious hankering for deviled eggs. Reed\u2019s life sounds glamorous and fun and filled with friends, and she writes about the South\u2019s idiosyncrasies with warmth and authority. Only, don\u2019t try to get it at the Strand: I nabbed the only copy.\u00a0<strong>\u2014Sadie O. Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How does <em>The New York Review of Books<\/em> even exist? Historians will marvel that something so good could last so long. Although we may never wrest an interview from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2012\/04\/12\/revel-revel\/\" target=\"_blank\">our hero Robert Silvers<\/a>\u2014who founded the <em>Review<\/em> fifty years ago with the late Barbara Epstein<strong>\u2014<\/strong>others are ready to talk. Radio host Janet Coleman kicks off\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/50-years\/2013\/jan\/15\/57th-street-rag\/\" target=\"_blank\">a series of <em>New York Review<\/em> reminiscences<\/a> at their blog.\u00a0<strong>\u2014Lorin Stein<\/strong><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Downton Abbey<\/em> has lately inspired me to read serial novels of Victorian England, allowing me to experience the same kind of long-term relationship with characters and the same range of social strata. Recently, I\u2019ve been enjoying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780486424514\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Moonstone<\/em><\/a>, by Wilkie Collins, of which T.\u2009S. Eliot said, \u201cEverything that is good in the modern story can be found in <em>The Moonstone<\/em>.\u201d A Victorian mystery with a dash of Indiana Jones, far from esoteric and very accessible.\u00a0<strong>\u2014Andrew Plimpton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Romanian concert pianist Radu Lupu performed at Carnegie Hall last night. It was a lovely program, by all accounts, but the second half of the evening was truly phenomenal. Sitting in a high-backed chair and moving his body infrequently, and then only slightly, Lupu played Book II of Debussy\u2019s Pr\u00e9ludes with tender forcefulness. The tension between his stoic person and romantic musicality was performance enough; in some ways, the music itself seemed irrelevant, though it\u2019s been running through my head since. There\u2019s no recording of Lupu playing it, that I can find, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9IzVTSMPT38\" target=\"_blank\">this series on YouTube<\/a> features a rendition by Sviatoslav Richter. <strong>\u2014Clare Fentress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Mad Men<\/em> fans were buoyed this week by the news that season six is set to premiere April 7.\u00a0I doubt that I need to convince anyone of Matthew Weiner\u2019s brilliance at this point\u2014but what other show would use \u201cMeditations in an Emergency\u201d to illustrate a character arc?\u00a0References to Frank O\u2019Hara bookend season two, even taking \u201cMeditations in an Emergency\u201d as the finale episode\u2019s title. If this intrigues you, check out this blog run by Steve Brauer, a professor at\u00a0St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York.\u00a0Especially good is this bit of criticism: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/4tup.wordpress.com\/2009\/08\/17\/what-frank-ohara-tells-us-about-don-draper\/\" target=\"_blank\">What Frank O\u2019Hara Tells Us About Don Draper<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<strong>\u2014Laura Creste<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0720612942\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0720612942&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=theparrev0f-20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>In Love<\/em><\/a>, by Alfred Hayes, is a slim novel from 1953 that deserves to be better known. The cover of the new edition features an Elizabeth Bowen quote in which she terms the book \u201ca little masterpiece,\u201d and I\u2019ve rarely seen the breakdown of a relationship, in all its banality and pettiness, evoked more vividly.
