Even if you didn\u2019t, parts of it are floating around your brain. It is a\u00a0favorite of pro-life people, because it talks about God recognizing us in the womb, taking care of us, and knowing how we\u2019ll turn out. (It is also\u2014I\u2019d bet money on this\u2014the source of our hundred-year-old American expression \u201csearch <em>me.<\/em>\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Psalm 139 gets my vote for being the most beautiful of the psalms in the King James version. The other day I happened to read it in French and it left me cold\u2014it conjured up surveillance\u2014whereas the high-low diction of the King James translators sings and is intimate, because you would only sing this way to a God you loved: \u201cIf I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there thy hand shall lead me.\u201d\u00a0It\u2019s like an advertisement for the English language. <!--more--><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>An old boss of mine used to claim that the most seductive words are not \u201cI love you,\u201d but \u201cI understand you.\u201d Surely a deep need is expressed by the line, \u201cThou knowest my downsitting and my uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.\u201d That fantasy, of someone who knows your every move\u2014who sees the entire  picture\u2014and looks out for you all the same, may be pernicious or childish. But how do we outgrow it? To hear the poem, anyhow, is to feel the problem.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>1<\/em> O\u00a0LORD,\u00a0thou hast\u00a0searched\u00a0me, and\u00a0known\u00a0<em>me<\/em>.\u00a0<br \/><em>2<\/em> Thou\u00a0knowest\u00a0my\u00a0downsitting\u00a0and mine\u00a0uprising, <br \/> thou\u00a0understandest\u00a0my\u00a0thought\u00a0afar\u00a0off.\u00a0<br \/><em>3<\/em> Thou\u00a0compassest my\u00a0path\u00a0and my lying\u00a0down,\u00a0<br \/> and art\u00a0acquainted\u00a0<em>with<\/em> all my\u00a0ways.\u00a0<br \/><em>4<\/em> For <em>there<\/em> is not a\u00a0word\u00a0in my\u00a0tongue,\u00a0<br \/> <em>but<\/em>, lo, O\u00a0LORD,\u00a0thou\u00a0knowest\u00a0it altogether.\u00a0<br \/><em>5<\/em> Thou hast\u00a0beset\u00a0me\u00a0behind\u00a0and\u00a0before,\u00a0<br \/> and\u00a0laid\u00a0thine\u00a0hand\u00a0upon me.\u00a0<br \/><em>6<\/em> <em>Such<\/em> knowledge\u00a0is too\u00a0wonderful\u00a0for me; <br \/> it is\u00a0high, I\u00a0cannot\u00a0<em>attain<\/em> unto it.\u00a0<br \/><em>7<\/em> Whither shall I\u00a0go\u00a0from thy\u00a0spirit?\u00a0<br \/> Or whither shall I\u00a0flee\u00a0from thy\u00a0presence?\u00a0<br \/><em>8<\/em> If I ascend\u00a0up\u00a0into\u00a0heaven,\u00a0thou <em>art<\/em> there: <br \/> if I make my\u00a0bed\u00a0in\u00a0hell,\u00a0behold, thou <em>art there<\/em>.\u00a0<br \/><em>9<\/em> <em>If<\/em> I\u00a0take\u00a0the\u00a0wings\u00a0of the\u00a0morning,\u00a0<br \/> <em>and<\/em> dwell\u00a0in the uttermost\u00a0parts\u00a0of the\u00a0sea;\u00a0<br \/><em>10<\/em> Even there shall thy\u00a0hand\u00a0lead\u00a0me, <br \/> and thy right\u00a0hand\u00a0shall\u00a0hold\u00a0me.\u00a0<br \/><em>11<\/em> If I\u00a0say, Surely the\u00a0darkness\u00a0shall\u00a0cover\u00a0me; <br \/> even the\u00a0night\u00a0shall be\u00a0light\u00a0about\u00a0me.\u00a0<br \/><em>12<\/em> Yea, the\u00a0darkness\u00a0hideth not from thee; <br \/> but the\u00a0night\u00a0shineth\u00a0as the\u00a0day:\u00a0<br \/> the\u00a0darkness\u00a0and the\u00a0light\u00a0<em>are<\/em> both alike to <em>thee<\/em>.\u00a0<br \/><em>13<\/em> For thou hast\u00a0possessed\u00a0my\u00a0reins:\u00a0<br \/> thou hast\u00a0covered\u00a0me in my\u00a0mother\u2019s\u00a0womb.\u00a0<br \/><em>14<\/em> I will\u00a0praise\u00a0thee; for I am\u00a0fearfully\u00a0<em>and<\/em> wonderfully\u00a0made:\u00a0<br \/> marvellous\u00a0<em>are<\/em> thy\u00a0works;\u00a0<br \/> and <em>that<\/em> my\u00a0soul\u00a0knoweth\u00a0right\u00a0well.\u00a0<br \/><em>15<\/em> My\u00a0substance was not\u00a0hid\u00a0from thee, <br \/> when I was\u00a0made\u00a0in\u00a0secret,\u00a0<br \/> <em>and<\/em> curiously\u00a0wrought\u00a0in the lowest\u00a0parts\u00a0of the\u00a0earth.\u00a0<br \/><em>16<\/em> Thine\u00a0eyes\u00a0did\u00a0see\u00a0my substance, yet being\u00a0unperfect;\u00a0<br \/> and in thy\u00a0book\u00a0all <em>my members<\/em> were\u00a0written, <br \/> <em>which<\/em> in\u00a0continuance\u00a0were\u00a0fashioned, <br \/> when <em>as yet there was<\/em> none\u00a0of them.\u00a0<br \/><em>17<\/em> How\u00a0precious\u00a0also are thy\u00a0thoughts\u00a0unto me, O\u00a0God!\u00a0<br \/> How\u00a0great\u00a0is the\u00a0sum\u00a0of them!\u00a0<br \/><em>18<\/em> <em>If<\/em> I should\u00a0count\u00a0them, they are more in\u00a0number\u00a0than the\u00a0sand:\u00a0<br \/> when I\u00a0awake, I am\u00a0still\u00a0with thee.\u00a0<br \/><em>19<\/em> Surely thou wilt\u00a0slay\u00a0the\u00a0wicked,\u00a0O\u00a0God:\u00a0<br \/> depart\u00a0from me therefore, ye\u00a0bloody\u00a0men.\u00a0<br \/><em>20<\/em> For they\u00a0speak\u00a0against thee\u00a0wickedly,\u00a0<br \/> <em>and<\/em> thine\u00a0enemies\u00a0take\u00a0<em>thy name<\/em> in\u00a0vain.\u00a0<br \/><em>21<\/em> Do not I\u00a0hate\u00a0them, O\u00a0LORD,\u00a0that\u00a0hate\u00a0thee? <br \/> And am not I\u00a0grieved\u00a0with those that rise\u00a0up\u00a0against thee?\u00a0<br \/><em>22<\/em> I\u00a0hate\u00a0them with\u00a0perfect\u00a0hatred:\u00a0<br \/> I count them mine\u00a0enemies.\u00a0<br \/><em>23<\/em> Search\u00a0me, O\u00a0God,\u00a0and\u00a0know\u00a0my\u00a0heart:\u00a0<br \/> try\u00a0me, and\u00a0know\u00a0my\u00a0thoughts:\u00a0<br \/><em>24<\/em> And\u00a0see\u00a0if <em>there be any<\/em> wicked way\u00a0in me, <br \/> and\u00a0lead\u00a0me in the\u00a0way\u00a0everlasting.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Lorin Stein is editor of <\/em>The Paris Review.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you grew up going to church, you already know Psalm 139.
