{"id":42569,"date":"2012-11-28T12:30:48","date_gmt":"2012-11-28T17:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=42569"},"modified":"2013-04-22T18:37:25","modified_gmt":"2013-04-22T22:37:25","slug":"poe-house-vandalized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/28\/poe-house-vandalized\/","title":{"rendered":"Poe House Vandalized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/71867488.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-42570\" title=\"71867488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/71867488-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/71867488-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/71867488.jpg 344w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a>It seems like every week there\u2019s a new indignity, whether it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/9314799\/Metal-thieves-strip-the-roof-of-Bronte-church.html\" target=\"_blank\">the destruction of the church<\/a> where the Bront\u00ebs worshipped, the theft of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/11\/20\/george-eliot-writing-desk_n_2164772.html\" target=\"_blank\">George Eliot\u2019s desk<\/a>, or, now, <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.baltimoresun.com\/2012-11-25\/news\/bs-md-ci-poe-house-vandalism-20121125_1_poe-baltimore-edgar-allan-poe-house-museum\" target=\"_blank\">the vandalism<\/a> of the house where Edgar Allan Poe lived and worked in the 1830s.<\/p>\n<p>For the second year in a row, the City of Baltimore <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/08\/08\/arts\/edgar-allan-poe-house-in-baltimore-faces-closing.html\" target=\"_blank\">has chosen not<\/a> to grant the Poe House its $85,000 subsidy; as a result, despite efforts of <a href=\"http:\/\/penniesforpoe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">supporters<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bedlamensemble.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">friends<\/a>, it may have to close permanently. In any event, the museum has been shuttered since September, and as such left more open to destruction; the front stairs have been stolen and graffiti painted on the door.
