I feel thee nigh,<br \/>\nI know thy breath in the burning sky!<br \/>\nAnd I wait, with a thrill in every vein,<br \/>\nFor the coming of the hurricane!<\/p>\n<p>    And lo! on the wing of the heavy gales,<br \/>\nThrough the boundless arch of heaven he sails;<br \/>\nSilent and slow, and terribly strong,<br \/>\nThe mighty shadow is borne along,<br \/>\nLike the dark eternity to come;<br \/>\nWhile the world below, dismayed and dumb,<br \/>\nThrough the calm of the thick hot atmosphere<br \/>\nLooks up at its gloomy folds with fear.<\/p>\n<p>    They darken fast; and the golden blaze<br \/>\nOf the sun is quenched in the lurid haze,<br \/>\nAnd he sends through the shade a funeral ray\u2014<br \/>\nA glare that is neither night nor day,<br \/>\nA beam that touches, with hues of death,<br \/>\nThe clouds above and the earth beneath.<br \/>\nTo its covert glides the silent bird,<br \/>\nWhile the hurricane\u2019s distant voice is heard,<br \/>\nUplifted among the mountains round,<br \/>\nAnd the forests hear and answer the sound.<\/p>\n<p>    He is come! he is come! do ye not behold<br \/>\nHis ample robes on the wind unrolled?<br \/>\nGiant of air! we bid thee hail!\u2014<br \/>\nHow his gray skirts toss in the whirling gale;<br \/>\nHow his huge and writhing arms are bent,<br \/>\nTo clasp the zone of the firmament,<br \/>\nAnd fold at length, in their dark embrace,<br \/>\nFrom mountain to mountain the visible space.<\/p>\n<p>    Darker\u2014still darker! the whirlwinds bear<br \/>\nThe dust of the plains to the middle air:<br \/>\nAnd hark to the crashing, long and loud,<br \/>\nOf the chariot of God in the thunder-cloud!<br \/>\nYou may trace its path by the flashes that start<br \/>\nFrom the rapid wheels where\u2019er they dart,<br \/>\nAs the fire-bolts leap to the world below,<br \/>\nAnd flood the skies with a lurid glow.<\/p>\n<p>    What roar is that?\u2014\u2019tis the rain that breaks<br \/>\nIn torrents away from the airy lakes,<br \/>\nHeavily poured on the shuddering ground,<br \/>\nAnd shedding a nameless horror round.<br \/>\nAh! well known woods, and mountains, and skies,<br \/>\nWith the very clouds!\u2014ye are lost to my eyes.<br \/>\nI seek ye vainly, and see in your place<br \/>\nThe shadowy tempest that sweeps through space,<br \/>\nA whirling ocean that fills the wall<br \/>\nOf the crystal heaven, and buries all.<br \/>\nAnd I, cut off from the world, remain<br \/>\nAlone with the terrible hurricane.<\/p>\n<p><em><\/p>\n<p>\u2014William Cullen Bryant, 1854<br \/><small><em>Painting Credit B.F.
