It goes to the heart of English archaeology, architecture, religion, poetry, and politics, as various generations of eccentrics and savants struggle with the evidence of deep human time. By the end of the book, Stonehenge is more mysterious than ever, and so are the people who built it. In the words of David St. Hubbins, \u201cNo one knows who they were &#8230; or what they were doing.\u201d\u00a0<strong>\u2014Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Christine Schutt\u2019s forthcoming novel,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802120385\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0802120385&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=theparrev0f-20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Prosperous Friends<\/em><\/a>, is a story about marriage and sex and time in roughly the sense that\u00a0<em>Wheat Field with Cypress<\/em> is a picture of a tree. Which is to say that execution is Schutt\u2019s genius: I read her slowly, almost aurally, not out of any confusion or even by conscious choice but because her prose is the kind of euphonic I wish I could hum.\u00a0<strong>\u2014Samuel Fox<\/strong><strong><br \/><\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0296362\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Power of Myth<\/a><\/em>, a 1988 PBS documentary comprising six hour-long interviews with the mythologist Joseph Campbell, is one of the most inspiring things I\u2019ve seen all year. Campbell\u2019s analysis of mythology from around the world gives an insight into just about every topic imaginable: death, religion, sex, art, jobs, semantics, history, feminism, storytelling, and nature, to name but a few. I struggled to pick just one quotation, as there was so much that I liked, but Campbell\u2019s elucidation of his interest in mythology is one of my favorites: \u201cI think of mythology as the homeland of the muses, the inspirers of art, the inspirers of poetry<span>. To see life as a poem and yourself participating in a poem is what the myth does for you,\u201d he explains. \u201cBy poem, I mean a vocabulary not in the form of words, but of acts and adventures which connotes something transcendent of the action here, and which yet informs the whole thing, so that you always feel in accord with the universal being.\u201d\u00a0<strong>\u2014Charlotte Goldney<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 1879, a German cleric named\u00a0Johann Schleyer received word from on high that he had to create\u00a0a universal language heavy on the umlauts. The crazy part? Volap\u00fck caught on. Writes Arika Okrent in an engaging <a href=\"http:\/\/publicdomainreview.org\/2012\/10\/17\/truth-beauty-and-volapuk\/\" target=\"_blank\">essay<\/a> on the defunct tongue,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>By the end of the 1880s there were more than 200 Volap\u00fck societies and clubs around the world and 25 Volap\u00fck journals. Over 1500 diplomas in Volap\u00fck had been awarded. In 1889, when the third international Volap\u00fck congress was held in Paris, the proceedings were entirely in Volap\u00fck. Everyone had at least heard of it. President Grover Cleveland\u2019s wife even named her dog Volap\u00fck.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The craze died down and Volap\u00fck never gained the foothold that arch-rival Esperanto did.
