As such, I am obviously revisiting that hard-boiled Fog City classic,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780679722649\" target=\"_blank\">The Maltese Falcon<\/a><\/em>. How can you beat it?\u00a0\u201cSpade took her face between his hands and he\u00a0kissed her mouth roughly and\u00a0contemptuously. Then he sat back and said: \u2018I\u2019ll think it over.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<strong>\u2014Sadie Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week I\u2019ve returned to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1557289808\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=1557289808&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=theparrev0f-20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Coal Life<\/em><\/a>, the 2012 debut collection from\u00a0<em>Birmingham Poetry Review<\/em> editor Adam Vines. And it\u2019s still staggeringly good. Vines has this way of delivering a deliciously playful line with a face so straight you feel like a fool for thinking words could work any other way. Check out \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poetrymagazine\/poem\/243918\" target=\"_blank\">River Politics<\/a>\u201d over at\u00a0<em>Poetry <\/em>for a prime example, and then spring for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1557289808\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=1557289808&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=theparrev0f-20\" target=\"_blank\">the full set<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>\u2014Samuel Fox<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Lately I&#8217;ve been enjoying the Fitzwilliam Museum\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/gallery\/cockerell\/directorcollector\/manuscripts.html.\" target=\"_blank\">online\u00a0exhibition<\/a> of illuminated manuscripts.\u00a0<strong>\u2014Charlotte Goldney<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Never have death and the infirmities of old age made me laugh so hard as in Flannery O\u2019Connor\u2019s \u201cA Late Encounter with the Enemy.\u201d The Southern gothic suffers not an ounce of dilution, leaving the foul-mouthed centenarian Civil War veteran and his monomaniacal granddaughter to shine in all their full twisted glory.\u00a0As with all O\u2019Connor, there\u2019s a healthy dose of philosophical pondering about the crippling weight of history and the power inherent in words.\u00a0More importantly, this story contains what is maybe the greatest line of dialogue in American literature, a phrase I try to incorporate into my own speech as often as possible.\u00a0When the decrepit Confederate general reaches the peak of his rage and exasperation, he screams, \u201cGod damm every goddamm thing to hell.\u201d\u00a0So give it try, use it with your friends, family, spouse, or even children.\u00a0I\u2019ve found it really does pack all the wallop and vitriol that General Sash intended.\u00a0<strong>\u2014Graham Rogers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clarice Lispector, a Ukrainian Jew who emigrated with her family to Brazil, was considered a treasure of Portuguese modern letters. Her fascinating first novel,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0811220028\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0811220028&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=theparrev0f-20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Near to the Wild Heart<\/em><\/a>, is getting fresh attention in the English-speaking world thanks to a new translation by Alison Entrekin. I picked it up recently and have been engrossed. Sam Gold at the <em>L Magazine<\/em> called Lispector \u201ca virtuoso of the murky,\u201d and indeed the description feels apt. Lispector\u2019s stream of metaphors seem to charge off in all directions at once, and the connections aren\u2019t always easy to make, but her protagonist Joana\u2019s sensual meditations on femininity, family, and consciousness participate in the tradition of the modern phenomenological novel (many have compared Lispector to Proust).
