Dictated by Grant on his deathbed, championed and published by Mark Twain, celebrated by Matthew Arnold and Edmund Wilson (who compared it to<em> Walden <\/em>and <em>Leaves of Grass<\/em>), the <em>Memoirs<\/em> were cited by Gertrude Stein as a main influence on her own prose. However you may write, you&#8217;ll find their power is contagious. Every page is a lesson in force, clarity, and grace under pressure. To read Grant\u2019s description of a military problem, then to read the orders he gave, is, among other things, to see a great modern writer at work. \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever imagined a music video as you listen to a song? Sigur Ros asked a dozen filmmakers to do just that with songs from their new album. The results are pretty great, but my favorite\u2014and I\u2019m hardly impartial\u2014is <a href=\"http:\/\/dashshaw.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dash Shaw<\/a>\u2019s animated (I mean that literally) <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/49262701\" target=\"_blank\">take on \u201cValtari.\u201d <\/a>Penned with <em>Shortbus<\/em> and <em>Hedwig<\/em> writer John Cameron Mitchell, the video features backgrounds by <a href=\"http:\/\/franksantoro.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Frank Santoro<\/a>, whose colors are, as ever, divine. \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in agreement with a friend of mine who considers most recent American covers of Cormac McCarthy\u2019s novels \u201coversaturated Windows wallpapers\u201d (why yes, Cormac, that horse <em>is<\/em> very pretty), then perhaps you will be both pleased and envious to know that the British ones now look like <a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/dENZb\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>, and apparently have for some time. Thanks to the now-defunct Aesthetic Book Blog for this gritty eye candy. And check out <em>The Millions<\/em>\u2019 annualish comparison of <a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/dEPJ0\" target=\"_blank\">American and British book covers<\/a> for further contemplation.\u00a0 <strong>\u2014Samuel Fox<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Hunter S. Thompson never had a problem coming in hot, opening his breakout book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780345410085\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Hell\u2019s Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga<\/em> <\/a>with humdingers like, \u201cThe Menace is loose again \u2026 Genghis Khan on an iron horse, a monster steed with a fiery anus, flat out through the eye of a beer can and up your daughter\u2019s leg with no quarter asked and none given; show the squares some class, give \u2019em a whiff of those kicks they&#8217;ll never know.\u201d He keeps it up straight through in what may be his most lucid writing ever.  After all, this was before the whiskey, women, bright lights, and cocaine got completely hold of his soul. <strong>\u2014Graham Rogers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guggenheim.org\/new-york\/exhibitions\/on-view\/rineke-dijkstra-a-retrospective\" target=\"_blank\">Rineke Dijkstra\u2019s Guggenheim retrospective<\/a> is a study and celebration of adolescent awkwardness. Her lens does not shy away from exposing the comic aspects of being \u201cnot a girl, not yet a woman,\u201d as Britney Spears so astutely put it, but at the same time monumentalizes this stage of being which many feel they\u2019d rather forget. <strong>\u2014Thea Slotover<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In college, I had a buddy who lived above Mondo Kim\u2019s Video on St. Mark\u2019s Place. During the day, you went through the video store to get up to the apartment. Outside business hours, you signed a death wish traveling up a rickety staircase one breath away from collapsing. Just like the apartment, Kim\u2019s was always a little strange, and all the better for it. When the store closed in 2008, the story got even stranger, as Karina Longworth details in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2012-09-12\/film\/kims-%20video-Sicily\/\" target=\"_blank\">a great piece in the <em>Village Voice<\/em><\/a>. While it was devastating to see such an institution go, the fact that its entire 55,000 DVD and VHS collection was shipped to a small Sicilian town oddly fits Kim\u2019s storied past.  <strong>\u2014Justin Alvarez<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though I wouldn\u2019t recommend starting off your morning with Mavis Gallant\u2019s journal entries\u2014they\u2019re rather dour, anxious accounts of being a hungry and poor young writer in Europe\u2014that\u2019s just what I\u2019ve been doing. In July, <em>The New Yorker<\/em> published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2012\/07\/09\/120709fa_fact_gallant\" target=\"_blank\">a selection<\/a> from the early fifties, when Gallant lived in Spain, and what keeps me coming back to them are the snippets of descriptive joy\u2014\u201cgirls in white skirts so starched they stand out  like lampshades\u201d; \u201cthe sky is like blue paper\u201d; \u201cbrown tiled walls, greasy soup\u201d\u2014that give hue to gray days of despair and disgust. <strong>\u2014N.R.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[tweetbutton]<\/p>\n<p>[facebook_ilike]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even if you&#8217;ve never read a book about the Civil War, the Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant will grip your imagination.
