Have made writing full time. Have novel and short essays. Attended NYU\u2019s Summer Writer program last year. Would you have a good list of places for submissions beyond <\/em>The Paris Review, <\/em>The New Yorker and <\/em>The New York Times? Thank you for reaching out via Twitter and offering some of us (hopefully\u00a0lovable) newbies some guidance.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nDear Newbie,<\/p>\n

\nWe get asked this a lot. It\u2019s a reasonable question, but it always makes our hearts sink.<\/p>\n

\nHere\u2019s the thing: no matter how many classes you take, no matter how much time you spend at the keyboard, you cannot write seriously unless you read. And that means, partly, reading your contemporaries. Their problems are your problems; you can\u2019t write\u2014that is, you can\u2019t write for serious readers\u2014until you know what the problems are. I could give you the names of some good journals, but\u2014supposing they take your work\u2014what\u2019s the point of publishing in a magazine that you don\u2019t already read?<\/p>\n

\nI know it\u2019s hard to discover good little magazines online (though our readers may be able to suggest favorites of their own). The best thing is to go to a good bookstore\u2014or a big enough Barnes & Noble\u2014and take stuff off the shelves. If you don\u2019t have access to a bookstore, find a good library. If you don\u2019t have access to a library, read the acknowledgments in the story collections that mean most to you. Then take out a couple of subscriptions.<\/p>\n

\nWhatever its defenders say, the M.F.A. system has created a surplus of would-be writers and a deficit of habitual readers\u2014and I\u2019m afraid it shows in the work submitted to us here at the Review<\/em>. This trend is easy to reverse, at least in your own life. Join the writing community for real: become a reader.<\/p>\n

\nDear Editors:<\/p>\n

\nI\u2019m looking for American novels with age-discrepant\/age-heterogeneous relationships\u2014themes like Nabokov\u2019s<\/em> Lolita. I unsuccessfully tried What Should I Read Next?, but it appears that the site\u2019s algorithm is based on the author and not the theme.<\/p>\n

\nDear MI,<\/p>\n

\nIf you want a dose of harsh reality about \u201cage-discrepant\u201d relationships, read Margaux Fragoso\u2019s memoir Tiger, Tiger<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0The writing is painfully vivid and emotionally subtle. I confess I couldn\u2019t finish the book. But it captures the confusions of a neglected girl who, starting at the age of seven, finds herself loved and desired by a middle-aged neighbor. Another writer who has written beautifully about age-discrepant attraction\u2014from the child\u2019s point of view\u2014is Harold Brodkey, for instance in The World is the Home of Love and Death<\/em><\/a>. Toni Morrison\u2019s The Bluest Eye<\/a> <\/em>and Mary Gaitskill\u2019s Two Girls, Fat and Thin<\/a> <\/em>also come to mind. And you may be interested in Tamara Faith Berger\u2019s new novel Maidenhead<\/em><\/a>\u2014an erotic fantasy about a Canadian girl who falls under the spell of a couple whom she meets during a family vacation in Key West.<\/p>\n

\nThere is no shortage of stories about grownups (usually men) in love with young people, told from the grownup\u2019s point of view. It is one of the staples of Western literature, from Boaz and David in the Bible, to Plato\u2019s dialogues, to Maupassant\u2019s Fort Comme la Mort<\/em>, to Stefan Zweig\u2019s Confusion<\/em>, to Colette\u2019s Cheri<\/em>, to Death in Venice<\/em>, to Henry Green\u2019s Loving<\/em> and Doting<\/em>. In contemporary American fiction we have\u2014apart from the books you mention\u2014John Cheever\u2019s story \u201cThe Country Husband,\u201d Yiyun Li\u2019s recent story \u201cA Man Like Him,\u201d Todd Solondz\u2019s movie Happiness<\/em>, and Woody Allen\u2019s Manhattan<\/em>. Really the list is endless. For novels try Updike or Oates or, if you\u2019re still in a Nabakovian mood, John Hawkes\u2019s Travesty<\/em>.<\/p>\n

No doubt our readers can suggest more titles than these.<\/div>\n
