A dream of my desk, very clean, nothing on it but a flower, inkpens, my hourglass. After waking, I arrange the desk to match the dream. I stare out the window for an hour until the phone rings: and this is why one must take the phone off the hook. My father calls to say he\u2019s mailed two boxes of his old sweaters to me. Ninety degrees Fahrenheit projected for today. <em>NYT<\/em> and <em>WSJ<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/HelioRickson-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3375\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:00 A.M.<\/strong> On the scale at the YMCA: I have gained forty-one pounds since January, thirty-five pounds of steel-hard muscle and six pounds of greasy trash. My goal is eleven more pounds before I go back to Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Encounter with P at the grocery. I haven\u2019t seen him for two years, not since I was so skinny that they called me <em>the disappearing man<\/em>. \u201cNow you\u2019re a monster,\u201d he says. But I am not a monster: I am a nice person.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:00 P.M.<\/strong> Walk along the river. Humid. A woman needed help untangling her garden hose: held her dog for her. Sparrows taking dust-baths, beating their heads against the ground. Starlings. A plague of robins. A single night-heron.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:00 P.M.<\/strong> Pasta with red peppers. Finished Dash Shaw\u2019s graphic novel <em>Bodyworld<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:00 P.M.<\/strong> Turned on <em>This Old House<\/em> and saw Bill Pierce from <em>Agni<\/em> sweeping polymerized sand into the cracks of his new patio. I gave a lecture to his night class at the Extension School last week. A student asked if I worry about what people think when I \u201cwrite something cheesy.\u201d \u201cCheese is very good for you,\u201d I said. \u201cIt contains calcium and vitamin A and phosphorus. So fuck them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/leila_marouane_slideshow_gallery_sfilate1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3378\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:00 P.M.<\/strong> Staying up late to finish Leila Marouane\u2019s novel <em>The Sexual Life of an Islamist in Paris<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY FIVE<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:00 A.M.<\/strong> Rain. Re-reading D. H. Lawrence on Whitman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2010\/07\/20\/five-essential-books-for-the-critic\/\">at L\u2019s instigation<\/a>. <em>NYT<\/em> and <em>WSJ<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:00 A.M.<\/strong> I call downtown to see if I\u2019m going to be able to hock my bass amp. The fellow on the phone\u2014enthusiastic, not to say coked up\u2014begins to describe his evaluative process to me. \u201cIt\u2019s like <em>Pawn Stars<\/em> on the Discovery Channel,\u201d he says, \u201chave you ever seen it?\u201d No, but I have been in a lot of pawn shops. The last time I was in this store I threw a fit, the kind of fit I thought I didn\u2019t have any more. But I was mistaken. My analyst found it all very interesting. \u201cHmm,\u201d he said. He\u2019s always humming, that man. He sounds like an old refrigerator. Sometimes I\u2019d like to break his fingers. There are ten of them.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">1:00 P.M.<\/strong> Home, with the bass amp converted into not quite enough money to buy a used saxophone. \u201cMy mouth isn\u2019t deformed,\u201d I tell the guy on the phone. \u201cI\u2019m not following you,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat I mean,\u201d I say, \u201cis can a normal person learn to make a sound on it?\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s an easy instrument to begin,\u201d he says, \u201cthe saxophone. At first. Relax.\u201d People are always telling me to relax.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">4:00 P.M.<\/strong> Cleaning the downstairs library. These other culture diarists are more interesting than I am. I wonder if they are lying. The temptation to lie is very great.<\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY SIX<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:00 A.M.<\/strong> A cicada molting on S\u2019s office window. Its slow green leg. <em>NYT<\/em> and <em>WSJ<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/152_sven_lindqvist-140x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3380\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:00 A.M.<\/strong> To the Y. Maxing out my deadlifts again. I want more, I\u2019m greedy, I\u2019m weak, I have so far to go. I don\u2019t know how Sven Lindqvist maintained his veneer of calm in <em>Bench Press<\/em>. I never cared about sports until I was thirty and I used to think it was ridiculous when I saw athletes getting psyched up, but now I\u2019m scared enough of being crushed under my squat poundage that I sometimes have to slap my face a couple of times before I can begin. You lift weights with your mind, not your body.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">2:00 P.M.<\/strong> Takeout: dumplings, pork with garlic sauce, beef with broccoli, chicken fried rice. Five fortune cookies have been included: apparently this was thought to be a meal for five.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">3:30 P.M.<\/strong> Comatose for two hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:30 P.M. <\/strong>To J\u2019s house. Crates of books he must get rid of. Burnaby\u2019s <em>On Horseback Through Asia Minor<\/em>, wonderful. Giants walked the earth in those days. They taught themselves to do without. Maybe they didn\u2019t want it in the first place. See also: Aunt Sally she\u2019s going to adopt me and sivilize me, and I can\u2019t stand it. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY SEVEN<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/800px-eggs_benedict-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3382\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:30 A.M.<\/strong> To the Cordon Bleu academy on my bike. Today: eggs. I sign up for eggs Benedict since I know what a poached egg is. What is a crepe, I wonder. A crepe is <em>sivilization<\/em>. I make Hollandaise sauce and English muffins with ham. This course has turned out to be restaurant training, army-cooking, industrial-scale cooking, breakfast for twenty. I\u2019m learning a lot in \u201cBack to Basics\u201d but it\u2019s clear what I needed was \u201cBasics the First Time Around.\u201d I make mayonnaise, whisking until my wrist is sore. I stand there with my hands on my hips, laughing: it really tastes like mayonnaise. The whole class comes over with spoons to see what the big deal is.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">2:00 P.M.<\/strong> Comatose for two hours. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:30 P.M.<\/strong> I take the mayonnaise to M\u2019s and we eat it with lobsters in order to give a visiting Milanese biochemist a taste of New England.
