As you can see by the above scoreboard, Team <em>Paris Review <\/em>won handily. The short version: we played quite well\u2014hitting sharp singles and putting the <em>fun<\/em> in fundamentals and whatnot\u2014while <em>n+1 <\/em>was &#8230; not at their best. Whether it was due to the absence of baseball\u2019s most notorious novelist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2011\/09\/20\/chad-harbach-on-the-art-of-fielding\/\">Chad Harbach<\/a>, or an off day on the mound by noted scoundrel Marco Roth, \u201cthe best goddamn literary magazine in America\u201d (\u2014Mary Karr) lacked its usual vigor and fortitude. Digging deep into the archives, it appears this is a new development: one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2010\/06\/15\/disaster-in-the-ninth\/\">heartbreaking defeats<\/a> in <em>TPR <\/em>softball history came two years ago against this very squad. Our victory, while certainly a boon for all things moral and just, failed to properly quench our thirst for vengeance, leaving us instead with a numb, hollow \u201cmeh\u201d feeling, a sensation that, I would imagine, is akin to eating a piece of cake that is neither chocolate nor made out of ice cream.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But, I suppose, that is all beside the point\u2014a sentiment stolen from Shaquille O\u2019Neal, the master of this kind of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TtbilFAG7ac\" target=\"_blank\">intellectual rope-a-dope<\/a>: \u201cnow stop, think about that \/ it ain\u2019t about that \/ it\u2019s about B.I.G., aka Big Shaq\u201d\u2014because a win is a win no matter how well fought.\u00a0And it\u2019s not like we didn\u2019t do anything to earn it.\u00a0After getting off to a slow start our offense found its groove in the third, culminating with a three-run home run by Joshua \u201cShades\u201d Pashman. Four runs was more than enough cushion for our pitcher and captain Stephen \u201cAndrew\u201d Hiltner as he tossed a near-flawless game, the only run scoring after a classic pop-fly mix-up in the fourth. New adman Noah \u201cScrunchy\u201d Wunsch proved the consummate hustle player, suffering a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/parisreview\/status\/212285094273089537\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\">nasty scrape<\/a> in an attempt to break up a double play in the fifth.
