DAY ONE<\/h3>\n

9:00 A.M.<\/strong> July is now nearly over. And what have I done with it. My neck hurts. Slept ten hours last night after a three-hour nap yesterday afternoon. I\u2019m overtrained.<\/p>\n

\"\"9:45 A.M.<\/strong> A letter to H about The Web\u2019s new record, Clydotorous Scrotodhendron<\/em>. The track now listed as \u201cLuxor\u201d was called \u201cRookie Season\u201d the summer I sat in with them. Took the phone off the hook this morning to protect S\u2019s desk time\u2014mine needs no protecting, it may need disrupting. Terror that my mother will call the moment the phone is reconnected.<\/p>\n

10:00 A.M.<\/strong> The Essential Artie Shaw<\/em>. Charlie Parker with Strings<\/em>.<\/p>\n

12:00 P.M.<\/strong> Walking to the Farmer\u2019s Market. M says we can\u2019t buy arugula from the Hmong because they use human shit as fertilizer\u2014at least I think that\u2019s what the problem is supposed to be: M can\u2019t say shit or even allude to it, like Henry James not talking about the dog on his porch: \u201csomething black, something canine.\u201d Something brown, something fecal. I buy arugula from the Hmong.<\/p>\n

\"\"2:00 P.M.<\/strong> Reading Werner Herzog\u2019s Conquest of the Useless<\/em>, his Fitzcarraldo diaries. He has an iron confidence in himself and in his own vision, his own interests. It\u2019s not about what Herzog thinks he\u2019s supposed to want, it\u2019s about what he actually does want.<\/p>\n

4:00 P.M.<\/strong> Double espresso with honey and milk. The New York Times<\/em> crossword.<\/p>\n

6:30 P.M.<\/strong> At the grill. Crumpling newspaper in the bottom of the chimney starter. A single swallow in the sky, twittering. Ants on the bricks in the spilt olive oil. You can see why primitive man thought fire was a god. Now we don\u2019t think there\u2019s any god at all. How primitive is that. An hour later: bad steak, all my fault. Good salad from S.<\/p>\n

8:00 P.M.<\/strong> Johnny Hodges and His Orchestra<\/em>\u2014a.k.a. Duke Ellington featuring Johnny Hodges.<\/p>\n

10:00 P.M.<\/strong> Staying up late to watch Mad Men<\/em>.<\/p>\n

DAY TWO<\/h3>\n

\"\"7:00 A.M.<\/strong> Decent weather for the first time in weeks. Windows are open all over the house. The air conditioner is silent. Whiz and honk of occasional cars. A far-off train. Wind in the trees. Birds squeeping and skronking. An angry, excited cawing. Gray light. This is a nature diary, not a culture diary. <\/p>\n

9:00 A.M.<\/strong> The New York Times<\/em> and The Wall Street Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

11:00 A.M.<\/strong> To YMCA. Hit the wall on deadlifts\u2014when you hit the wall, you need the man with the hammer. Kept going, ripped my palm open, almost passed out.<\/p>\n

\"\"1:30 P.M.<\/strong> To Stereo Jack\u2019s. Impulse CD of Coleman Hawkins with Ellington, a two-record set of Gene Ammons (\u201cThe 78 Era\u201d), Astor Piazzolla\u2019s The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night<\/em>, Archie Shepp and Richard Davis live in Boston 1989.<\/p>\n

2:00 P.M.<\/strong> Comatose for three hours.<\/p>\n

7:00 P.M.<\/strong> Too hot to cook. Out to Jos\u00e9\u2019s for carne asada. Scorpion tattoo on our waiter\u2019s neck. <\/p>\n

DAY THREE<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>9:00 A.M.<\/strong> The Ultimate Art Tatum<\/em>. Parker is supposed to have said, \u201cI wish I could play like Tatum\u2019s right hand.\u201d What is courage, where does it come from. My torpor is disgusting. What is its origin. I am always inquiring into origins\u2014what is culture, what is a diary\u2014why not just make a mess of things. Stop preparing and act.<\/p>\n

10:00 A.M.<\/strong> NYT and WSJ.<\/p>\n

3:00 P.M.<\/strong> Tuna and noodles. Ran a copy of Andrzej Stasiuk\u2019s Fado<\/em> with some lavender\u2014from our garden, harvested yesterday\u2014over to K\u2019s house. The dog didn\u2019t bark when I knocked, nor when I rang the bell: terror that K has died. It is revolting to write using initials, especially K; but to use real names on the Internet is also very bad. A simple solution: write nothing, be nothing, please everyone.<\/p>\n

7:00 P.M.<\/strong> M for dinner. S makes meat loaf, potato salad, fantastic cucumbers. M is listening to Ulysses<\/em> on CD and asks for help understanding it. I go downstairs for Anthony Burgess\u2019s Here Comes Everybody<\/em> and am surprised to find that I don\u2019t own a copy any more\u2014maybe my ex-wife took it, along with my Television and Elvis Costello LPs and my jumper cables and whatever else I have misplaced and can blame on her. Fortunately S has her own paperback, published as Re: Joyce<\/em>. I lecture for ten minutes, then rig an old Walkman with external speakers and play a cassette of Joyce reading aloud. M interrupts: \u201cI can probably find all of this on Google,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
